North Anna Nuclear plant did a REACTOR SCRAM
per Bozell... and generators seem to still be working per the Union of Concerned Scientists.

1. As long as the SCRAM was successful, this is an example of them erring on the side of caution.

As long as the water level in the core is still good, this is something I perceive as good news.

OnEdit: Oh, and I recced this but it still shows 0. Since the posting was a statement of flat fact as reported by the media, I find the un-recommendation of this information to be odious behavior.

8. It doesn't have to be a sinister motivation
Some people just like to unrec whast they see as needless dupes. The fact that the reactors shut down has been posted several times.

2. "Scram" = Emergency warm shutdown of the reactor. Basically, turning it off without killing it.
Standard procedure when almost anything major happens to the area, even if there's no known damage, just so the operators can assess everything.

6. Precisely. The control rods shut down the active fission reaction, leaving the plant idling.

Most plants these days are designed so that the control rods drop automatically if anything unusual happens, even without human intervention. This reduces the reactor's heat production to about 3% of what it is when it's running, most of that due to the decay of short-lived isotopes. Of course that's still a considerable amount of heat, so you still need coolant just to keep it on an even keel.
