1. What else is new

The place is old as dirt and didn't need a quake to burst its pipes.

I used to work there.

2. It's exactly three days younger than I am.

3. I was lucky enough to work on the top floor

Fifth Floor- A ring. The center most ring.

There were guys who worked in the basement (Which looks NOTHING like Raiders Of The Lost Ark), who would tell me how common floods, power outages and rats the size of cats down there.

Working in the basement was a health hazard in it self.

I can see all the panicked colonels and their shops running out in the all when the quake it. That would have been funny. Anyway, on a normal day, you can roll a bowling ball down any corridor in the Pentagon and hit five or six colonels. They're a dime a dozen there. In the Pentagon, you're a nobody unless you've go 3 of 4 stars on your shoulders. Everyone else is a gofer.

4. Wake Island or the 5 Sided Circus's basement

6. I had a ball there for seven 1/2 years.

Imagine working someplace where all the officers are well behaved. The biggest complaint that they had was long commutes from outside of the Beltway. But I have a feeling that most of were bummed out because of the severe loss of clout. On a base, a captain can be a squadron section commander and a major can be a unit commander, but at the Pentagon, the only things these guys could command was a coffee pot. Plus, they worked the company grades like dogs. Late nights, weekends, holidays… It was like a prison sentence. For the colonels, the Pentagon was a vacation. Their LCs did all of the whip snapping and companies did all of the leg work. I used to date this colonel's secretary and I tell you, he was like the most relaxed mofo ever.

At least at the MPF where I worked, we all had our regular base jobs. But outside of us, the Comm SQ and Security Cops, it was all "special" for everyone else. Special meaning demoted.

My commute was no more than a 20 minute bus ride and I had all of DC to play around during the weekends. It was a blast. Being an enlisted guy in the Pentagon was the best thing ever.

The only good reason for me to leave DC was to go on an extended long tour to Germany.
