Attorney General of N.Y. Is Said to Face Pressure on Bank Foreclosure Deal
By GRETCHEN MORGENSON - NYT
Published: August 21, 2011

<snip>

Eric T. Schneiderman, the attorney general of New York, has come under increasing pressure from the Obama administration to drop his opposition to a wide-ranging state settlement with banks over dubious foreclosure practices, according to people briefed on discussions about the deal.

In recent weeks, Shaun Donovan, the secretary of Housing and Urban Development, and high-level Justice Department officials have been waging an intensifying campaign to try to persuade the attorney general to support the settlement, said the people briefed on the talks.

<And...>

An initial term sheet outlining a possible settlement emerged in March, with institutions including Bank of America, Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo being asked to pay about $20 billion that would go toward loan modifications and possibly counseling for homeowners.

In exchange, the attorneys general participating in the deal would have agreed to sign broad releases preventing them from bringing further litigation on matters relating to the improper bank practices.

2. It's an absolute disgrace that Democrats are trying to protect
these treasonous criminals. But when some poor guy steals a few groceries, off to jail with him. They raided the treasury, and did knowingly, pre-meditated, and deliberately deceived investors and then came running to the American People (remember Paulson with his three page edict) demanding like spoiled brats that we bail them out. Then they refuse to help the very people they stole from.

I sure hope this doesn't happen. Every last one of them needs to be held accountable and all the money they stole, returned to the people they stole it from. The only way to find that money, is to start prosecuting them. At least they'll be spending some of it trying to defend themselves instead of hiding it offshore somewhere.

15. Reminds me of the Wikileaks cables revealing the Obama
administration putting pressure on Spain not to prosecute War Criminals also. What is it with these people? Whose side are they on?

Absolutely infuriating, what I really want to say is not printable!

But no longer surprised by anything that this Administration does.

Like you say, one lone criminal, acting out of desperate circumstances, might spend time in prison.

But now the reality is that our financial system is basically three card monte, with the proceeds always going to the Rich SOB's running the system, and also to all the Congress people and others they have put in office, the Public is told the best thing to do is to simply let the crooks promise to overhaul the system and do better next time around (And by the way, they can keep their ill gotten gains.)

Yves Smith adds to the subject and explains in detail:

It is high time to describe the Obama Administration by its proper name: corrupt.

5. Everyone has their price. Some are higher than others.
: : : :

'Would you have sex with anyone for $1000 dollars?'

'Certainly not!'

'What about sex with anyone for $10,000?'

'No...'

'How about $100,000?'

'Well...no...'

'How about $1,000,000?'

'Um....no...'

'How about 10,000,000?'

'Probably not...'

'How about $100,000,000?'

'OK - maybe for that...'

'Good. Now that we have established that you are a whore...'

: : : :

Point is, although this might be a sexist question to ask of a woman, it's considered OK to ask of a politician.

Flame away.

16. No flame, I just think the conversation would have probably
ended at the million dollar question, for a lot of our current 'reps' in DC. Maybe even before that. Otoh, the higher their position, the longer the conversation would be I suppose. It's probably more expensive to buy a Senator than a Congressperson I would think.

But money definitely talks as apparent in the attempt to save the poor Wall St. criminals from the rule of law.

6. "counseling for homeowners"
Counseling for homeowners about to lose their homes is about as helpful as "job training/re-training" when there are no jobs.
