Popcorn’s Dark Secret

By KAREN BARROW

Tony Cenicola/The New York Times
Movie popcorn contained an alarming amount of fat, salt and calories.
Sitting in a dark movie theater with your friends and a tub of buttery popcorn sounds like a perfect way to spend a Saturday night – and it could be, if you are willing to share your popcorn with the entire row of moviegoers around you.

    :popcorn::popcorn:

A review of the nutritional contents of movie-theater popcorn reveals an alarming amount of fat, salt and calories in even the smallest sizes. The study, from the Center for Science in the Public Interest, looked at popcorn from three movie theater chains and detailed the contents of all portions offered.

    :popcorn::popcorn:

A large tub of popcorn at Regal Cinemas, for example, holds 20 cups of popcorn and has 1,200 calories, 980 milligrams of sodium and 60 grams of saturated fat. Adding just a tablespoon of butter adds 130 calories. And do not forget that it comes with free refills.

    :popcorn::popcorn:

Not so hungry? The medium size popcorn, which comes in a bag, contains the same amount as the large. And even the small, at 11 cups, delivers 670 calories, 550 milligrams of sodium and 24 grams of saturated fat.

The sinfully delicious rest: http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/11/19/popcorn/

1. "Adding just a tablespoon of butter "
I suspect that the closest the stuff on movie theater popcorn gets to butter is that the counter clerk had a cheese sandwich for lunch!

3. I like movie popcorn and the butter.
i rarely eat it and when i do, it's my main meal of the day, and never the large or finish a medium. i like the salt and the oil, but it doesn't take that long to satiate that.

4. My main complaint about popcorn is the amount of hulls, nowadays
Edited on Tue Aug-23-11 06:54 PM by Raine
they must use the cheapest lowest grade of corn imaginable. I don't remember the hulls being so bad even a few years ago. Whatever corn they use for popcorn isn't even fit to use to feed pigs with IMO. :puke:

edit: changed one word

14. You can get popcorn without hulls from QVC.com

I have ordered it before and the popcorn is very good. I have teeth problems and cannot eat popcorn with hulls.

15. THANKS for that info
I watch QVC sometimes but must have missed the popcorn. I'll check out the website, I love popcorn but can't tolerate the hulls in my teeth. THANKS again! :-) :hi:

7. This is why I like air-popped.
I never eat the shit they sell at the movie theater.

Air-popped corn with some chili powder and Bragg's Liquid Amino, splash of lime.

Bottle of sparkling water.

Red Box.

My big flat TV w/ surround sound.

Best moviehouse in DC.

11. Wow, Bragg's has a lot of good stuff...
Never heard of the Liquid Amino. I'm using the apple cider.

I'll try your chili powder/Liquid Amino concoction. :)
