I don't need a second job, I can support myself just fine with one, but I enjoy the second job. I get to have some fun, and I make some money that I can buy anything I want, and justify the purchase.

The first one I've been at for 8 years and my hours got cut in half by necessity. So I had to take a second part time job ringing a register at night for minimum wage. I bring home less then 300.00 every two weeks (20 hours a week) with that one.

To my surprise my boss just told my team at work that my company is looking to hire two new people on my team. One position is for a relatively inexperienced person in insurance and the other requires an experienced individual- both good paying jobs. As amazing as that sounds, I work for a hospital, and the benefits are actually quite good, and since I can currently get by on part time, I'm VERY happy. The hourly wage is pretty decent, just over twelve dollars an hour. I could get a full-time job at the hospital if I wanted, but I've chosen to live a quiet little life and get by on less.

In two more years when I'm on Medicare, I'll look into going back to temp work, so I can work for a few weeks and then take some time off. I'm figuring if I generally work three weeks a month at full time, I'll be making more money, but then I can go off and travel a bit more. Meanwhile, I'm very fortunate to be in this position, and I know it.

My wife does the same thing, but teached full time at another community college. Together we do ok.

She also teaches 3 courses online, but is going to have to cut back for health reasons. when she does we will have to move to a cheaper place....

which is not really a huge concern next to the situation that many are in.

I will be retiring from the full-time job at the end of the year, though not exactly by choice: My job is being transferred to a location I don't want to live in, so I took an early retirement package. We'll see what happens next - I still have my part-time job.

24. I work at one job for 182 contracted days a year.

Each of those days is about 10 hours long. Sometimes longer. The contract requires 8 hours a day on site, but also requires that the job get done, so the extra hours beyond the contract are unpaid.

I receive an hourly "stipend" for extra duties assigned that are not included in the contract. That stipend is about 1/3 what my hourly rate would be if you took my daily contractual rate and divided it by the 8 hours my contract calls for. It doesn't matter that these extra duties involve the 11th and 12th hours of many work days...put me over the 40 contractual hours, the 50 REAL hours it takes to complete the contract. There's no time and a half. Those extra hours come at 1/3 the regular rate.

I also put in about 15 extra unpaid days outside those 182 contractual days...for no pay at all. That's what it takes to set up and plan for a contractual year.

Then there are weekend hours...also unpaid. I try not to do too many; probably only 2-3 hours each weekend, which adds up to about another 90 or so hours of unpaid time during a contractual work year. All needed to keep up with the contractual duties that I'm theoretically able to complete in an 8 hour day. Theory simply doesn't fit practice.

and average about 40 -42 (sometimes more) hours a week. I have very decent pay and benefits now. I just started a few weeks ago with the second job that qualified me for benefits. My dh is working but will likely be laid off soon. He may be out for most of the winter as his work tends to be seasonal.

40. Yes. I work in a hospital.

The first job I had there was a contract (no benefits) job. I took a part time bedside nursing job on a cardiac floor to do in addition to my contract job. The contract position is very interesting. I specifically work with congestive heart failure patients, educating them on self management to try and prevent frequent readmissions. When you work on the floor as a bedside nurse, particularly on a cardiac floor, it is so busy-- you barely have the time to do any teaching besides safety and how to use the phone, tv, what medications I'm giving etc. Most of the teaching is done at discharge. However, discharge teaching is very ineffective as most people are just not ready to learn at that point. They are in a hurry to leave. A study was done that found 80% of patients forgot their discharge teaching. So my contract job has our teaching team visiting patients every day and teaching them about self management, dietary changes etc. We are not pressured to be fast/multitasking, we build a relationship with the patient that allows them to feel comfortable calling us after discharge. We do follow up calls after discharge to see how they are doing and communicate with homecare.

The problems we run into are systemic. 1. the rehab centers/nursing homes-- change the discharge instructions and do not manage our heart failure patients well-- they feed them high sodium diets and do not weigh them everyday and often discount their reports of symptoms.
2. the Cardiologists- their practices are so busy we often cannot get their follow-up appts before 10 days after discharge. The optimum is 2 days after discharge. We do not have a CHF clinic that we can direct them to within those 2 days. 3. Pts often refuse homecare nursing when they can benefit often because they think they cannot afford it. 4. Patients who have advanced disease will always continue to return to the hospital for what will end up being unreimubursed medicare admissions unless a palliative care program is set up to divert those admissions. This is an undeveloped aspect of medical care without an infrastructure to support it. So working to solve these problems is very rewarding. My floor job is also rewarding but in a more immediate "putting out fires"/getting everything done kind of way but can burn one out without the other-- that is why I don't do it full time (generally about 4 shifts a week).

Edited to add: There is plenty of work that needs to be done in our economy/communities that goes undone because there are no "jobs" created to complete it. The problem is that no one wants to pay to get them done. Everyone just wants to complain instead. They say there is no money. There is money, no one has the will to get it.

I've had some temporary thing here and there, such as working for the Census. But for this year, the only work I've had is one quick proofreading gig and writing a biweekly column for a website. I love doing the column, but it only pays a small bill or two. BTW, I went to a somewhat elite college and also have a master's degree; that doesn't seem to matter.

- then no work for 5 months. Finally got a part time job with about 1/3 the hours and 1/2 the hourly wage of my previous job. Have managed to get into another position at new job and have more hours, but still part time. Am still grossly underemployed.
