9. Surely smarter, and more honest.
Probably wondering about what his profession should be.

7. It says a lot about Republicans that Romney qualifies as a conniving city-slicker in their books.

11. I can't imagine why Romney would want to represent such a throwback party...
Is he really that desperate?

19. Republicans are threatened by candidates who are smarter or more educated than a paper bag
Edited on Wed Oct-19-11 11:10 AM by firehorse
They prefer candidates they can identify with so an unqualified bigoted moron with a track record of bankrupting every business they've had their hand in, is preferable - even if it means we all suffer long term socio/economic consequences.

6. He's the least scary of the front runners.
Huntsman also doesn't scare me, but he has no traction. As for Perry, Cain and Bachmann, they are a bag of mixed nuts.

16. Because the primaries are geared to each party's base.
The Republican base is far more conservative than the average Republican. Ditto for the Democrats, but in reverse.

12. I agree.
The GOP will split into another party that will siphon off right wing votes.

18. The republican base will not accept him for lots of reasons. What they want is a blend of
Palin, Cain (except for his race), Bachman, Gingrich, Paul, Perry and Santorum. Being a Mormon is a losing position for Romney. Crazy wins the nomination this time and teabaggers rule.

17. He's the best chance to defeat Obama but he won't get the nomination
In Jesusland states and closed primaries - Romney doesn't stand a chance.

These are the only states that Romney might have a chance of winning because they are open primaries:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_primaries_in_the_United_States#States_with_an_open_presidential_primary

That means independent and moderate voters could get involved and help give Romney the win.

Consider this - in 2010, Mike Castle, a republican who for 40 years has won every election he ever ran in the state of very democratic Delaware finally lost his first race. He lost because Delaware is a closed primary state and the rightwing took control of the election and gave Christine O'Donnell the win. Minutes after she won the state of Delaware went from 'Safe Republican' state for the US Senate seat to 'Safe Democrat'.

Had that election been an open primary, Republicans would have won the seat (Joe Biden's old Senate seat) because Castle is a moderate who appeals to voters in both parties. But the primary was closed and there are alot of loopy voters in Southern Delaware.

I know that DE is only 3 electorial votes but with a closed primary he doesn't stand a chance. That's the same for all the other states without open primaries and that includes California, Pennyslvania, Florida and New York - 4 of the largest states without open primaries. And these are the type of states that when you eliminate democrats and the independant voters you end up with very right-wing nut jobs voting.

22. If he does ,it will depress the vote from the tea party part of
the GOP, prbably a pretty large percentage of the base. I expect the GOP are screwed no matter who gets the nod.
