Game Over for Faster Than Light Neutrinos?
Source: ScienceBlogs

One of the most famous scientific developments in the 20th century was the revelation that the Universe had a speed limit: the speed of light.

Clocking in at exactly 299,792,458 m/s, Einstein's theory of relativity states that any particle with mass can only approach -- but can never reach -- this maximal speed.

Just to let you know: this is a serious blog written by serious scientists.

It is a rather complex article but if you want to get to the bottom line go toward the bottom of the piece. There are first inklings that there were mistakes in the OPERA results showing neutrinos traveling at faster than light speed.

(darn, I really do want warp drive!)

1. I've been waiting for the other shoe to drop ever since this was first announced
Reminds me of the 'warm fusion' kerfuffle a couple of decades ago.

2. They ripping the blog article apart in the comment section...
I do not have the education to say one way or another but I scrolled down through the comment section & it appears hardly anyone agrees with the blog post.

I guess we will have to continue waiting.

6. The article is theoretical.
The OPERA data is observed. There will be no confirmation or debunking of the OPERA data until other labs either duplicate or fail to duplicate its results.

9. THANK YOU, THANK YOU;
I have been trying to think of that excellent Asimov short story for some time. He sure knew how to write them. I wonder what he would have made of this news?
