Kankakee's top Marine looks back

Oct. 22, 2011, 7:40 am

You were in charge of Marine deception operations during Desert Storm and Desert Shield. Could you explain what you did?

I was teaching at Fort Bragg and I wrote a paper saying that Americans should be good at deception because we have lived with it all our lives. We call it advertising. But deception must be believable. It can't be hokey. The best way to get inside someone's head is to tell him something he wants to believe.

4. Q: "How do you feel about the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell?"

A: "I have served with gays. Here's my take. It was long overdue. We should not decide who can serve based on their birth. You should not have to hide any fact to serve your country. "

5. I disagree. It *can* be hokey; this for example . . .

. . . or this . . .

. . . and it needn't be believable, as long as it's overproduced . . .

Joe Klein, responded: "Well, that was probably the coolest presidential image since Bill Pullman played the jet fighter pilot in the movie Independence Day."
