"Grid Girls", (actually they are women)

India finally races in Bernie's circus

The thunderous glitz of Formula One racing, with the very fast V8 engines and the more dangerously pretty "Grid Girls", make their South Asia debut on October 30 in India - after aborted attempts to find a place in the international circuit in 1998, 2003 and 2007.

The previews are encouraging. Australia's star F1 driver Mark Webber of the Red Bull Renault team called the new Indian Grand Prix circuit "one of the fastest and most challenging in the world. I can't wait for the start," he said, after a demonstration drive around the track. <1>

New York-born singer Lady Gaga stars among festivities to mark the Indian Grand Prix from October 28 to race day Sunday, October 30. India joins five other Asian countries - Malaysia, China, Singapore, Japan and Korea in the F1 calendar. The 19-race annual schedule stretches across five continents and has following of over 500 million people.

"The Indian Grand Prix has to be the most high profile global event India has hosted," says Vicky Chandhok, the president of the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India and a former rally driver, "given the fact that F1 has a 527 million television audience across over 130 countries."
