Brokaw (on w/Rose) said AARP ad too harsh. Should've looked for middle ground.
Edited on Tue Nov-01-11 11:56 PM by Bozita
The ad where the guy said there's 50,000,000 others like him and they don't want to see their benefits cut.

Obviously he never read or even heard of Jim Hightower's book a few years back.

This one:

Fuck Tom Brokaw and the armadillo he rode into town on!

On OWS, Tom is still looking for a single message from them.

Fuck him all over again. ... Assclown self-disguised as middle America!

1. Middle ground of what?
Brokaw doesn't know what it is like to be a senior citizen relying on Social Security to survive.

2. He was too busy writing books that exploit the "Greatest Generation" to read anyone else's work.
If he put out one more "Selfless Sacrifice of Brave People Who Listened to Glen Miller" book where he ripped off the battle and homefront stories of WW2-era brave and persevering geezers, repackaged them, and stole all the profit from the telling, I was gonna barf.

He makes me ill. He's an opportunist who has pronounciation issues--anytime he says anything with an "L" in it I have an urge to clear my throat!!! Lousy, lackluster, lazy lout!!!!!

I *heart* Calvin Trillin!

4. I talked to someone else about this
In many political conversations candidates and advocates prioritize specific groups of people. There is an ongoing subtext about how veterans deserve the best health care because of their service. No one disagrees, but the same is not said about people who are simply alive in the wealthiest country on earth.
The same argument is applied to seniors.
There are other ways 99%ers place prioritize their lives in terms of what kind of quality of life they should have based on how long they have worked, the taxes they have paid, etc.
He's saying that even within the 99% there are "I've got mine" and "I deserve a good life" claims. It would be more unifying if that rhetoric were left behind. I think he's correct.

5. Tom is filthy rich and doesn't want to pay his share of taxes.
He has no idea what it will mean for American families if Medicare and Social Security are cut even a little bit.

Yet another greedy rich person. Never liked him. Never will. He is calloused and cares only for the rich.

6. He also repeated a meme I'm getting tired of...
...that the "blight of money goes across all parties." Well Tom, there are only two major parties in the US - the Republicans and the Democrats. The Republicans are almost across the board bought and paid for; the Democrats generally aren't and where they are voting with the Republican line its because they're in a Red state and are afraid of being voted out by a big money fueled GOP campaign. Did we learn nothing from Max Cleland?

"This is a struggle of good and evil. And we're the good." - Howard Dean

"On the one hand, the Republicans are telling industrial workers that the high cost of food in the cities is due to this government's farm policy. On the other hand, the Republicans are telling the farmers that the high cost of manufactured goods on the farm is due to this government's labor policy. That's plain hokum. It's an old political trick: "If you can't convince 'em, confuse 'em." But this time it won't work." Harry S Truman, September 1948

He is, as usual, talking out of his ass.

8. Don't you just love how rich spokespeople
always feel compelled to tell US how we should react to things?

They spend hours prepping their utterances to perfectly shape the message they send, and yet when we do not accept their perceptions, we are scolded.:grr:

9. kind of like when a person is drowning and someone throws out a rope halfway
I guess that would be meeting them halfway and finding the "middle ground."

Or perhaps we could build a society that is the middle ground between capitalism and socialism.

10. Tom has a new book out...
One wherein he supposedly tells America where we all went wrong and some such rot.

Eh... he's trying to become news.

16. Another one of those, eh?
I guess he got tired of determining who is the "greatest generation", as if he is the authority on that, too. I can't stand the guy, and I don't understand why people give this putz so much credence. He is nothing but a news reader.
