I Thought The Mafia No Longer Exists
More than 100 alleged mobsters are being arrested today, in what the FBI is calling the biggest New York mafia bust ever, NBC New York reports.

Later today, Attorney General Eric Holder and other law enforcement officials will hold a press conference in Brooklyn to discuss the round-up.

People briefed on the action told The New York Times that those arrested include people connected to seven crime families in New York, New Jersey and Rhode Island, and the charges include murder, racketeering, extortion, loan-sharking, gambling, and labor-racketeering. The defendants range from book makers to senior mob figures and union officials, and include two dozen "made members of New York's five crime families and the families in New Jersey and New England."

The New York Daily News reports that the defendants will be held in the brig at Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn until they are arraigned later today.

4. I'm glad they were arrested BUT the Italian-American Mafia
pales in comparison to what the new organized crime family from the former Soviet Union that's spread all over the world and traffics women, children, organs. Maybe I'm not looking at things correctly but it seems to me that the Italian-American Mafia had a sense of honor about women and children. I'm not saying they're angels or good, or that I defend them in the least, but those other guys are heartless scum with no consciences whatsoever.

7. There are actually three traditional Italian crime syndicates
First is the Mafia that we're all used to hearing about, based in Sicily. But there's also the 'Ndrangheta, which hails out of the Calabrian Mountains of southern Italy and has been involved in America since around 1906. There's also the Comorra, arguably the oldest of the three syndicates, based in Naples and with comparatively little presence in the States.

Right now, the 'Ndrangheta has been growing in power worldwide, including in the States. They rival the Russian Mafia and the Mexican cartels in their global influence and their penchant for violence.
