Skinner and the gang rolled out a preview of the future DU. Have you visited yet? Have you posted in your state forum yet? How about visiting the Lounge? And did you know the Jon Stewart group is inside of the Guns forum?

To me it seems very similar to the current DU. It's so similar that I don't think it's a big change.

But a table based layout? Really? Hello....it's 2011!

The new design requires a bit more scrolling around to find things too. That's a huge pain on my mobile (which tends to be my primary browsing device nowadays).

And it needs more color. The new design seems to have less shading that the current one, and it doesn't scale out to fill larger screens the way the current one does. That means a lot of white space and dense text, which is kind of hard on the eyes.

But, it's unfinished, so we'll see where it ends up.

19. Table based is uninviting and more complicated. Less quick read. Too much

having to spend time scrolling down through everything. Where are the burning symbols? Need the burning symbols to tell what's hot for those of us with little time. Hope greatest and latest will come back somehow. Like how fast it is though.

I don't read DU when I'm away from my desk, because reading on an iPhone is not fun at all.

24. There's one great feature for mobile users.

The new RSS feeds make it possible to subscribe to the forums and keep tabs on topics without having to visit regularly. When you see a topic you're interested in, you can follow the feed link directly to the thread, bypassing most of the UI.

I just wish they'd gone a step further and allowed dynamic RSS feeds for the threads as well. If they'd done that, we could write a mobile DU app that would be much friendlier for those of us who read on the go. As it is now, there's no way to monitor the posts in the threads themselves via RSS.

Still, the new feeds are a big step forward.

I would hope that it would recognize iPhones and make the body section narrower so we read the text without needing to zoom and scroll left and right as well as up and down.

Maybe I'm missing something... Still exploring.

On using the site on my Android browser is a never-ending series of pinch zooms and scrolls across the screen. Not really any worse than the current DU though.
