6. Everything he did was ahead of its time
I still get chills when I see the waiting room in "The Hospital," a sometimes silly but prescient movie about what's happening in an overwhelmed and understaffed health "care" system that's run by dollars, not by anything else, including basic decency. I don't know of anybody from Boston who can look at the hellish waiting room scene and not think of Boston City Hospital.

He was one of the last literate screenwriters. before the whole thing went to special effects and dialog barely over the level of grunts.

8. Don't forget the excellent "The Americanization of Emily"
Julie Andrews did it between "Mary Poppins" and "The Sound of Music" and proves her acting talent - she doesn't sing a note during the entire film yet turns in a superb performance. The supporting cast including James Coburn and Melvyn Douglas is top-notch and the witty script by Paddy Chayefsky with its subtle anti-war theme is still relevant and interesting today. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057840/

10. Chayefsky was one of my favorite playwriters
"Marty" and "Middle of the Night" are the best of Chayefsky. He wrote of the common man and his everyday struggles.

He left us way too young, but I'm almost relieved that he didn't live long enough to see "Network" come to full realization.

I feel the same way about Rod Serling. His play "Patterns" was the tale of an older man being squeezed out of a job by a ruthless corporate boss. He also died too young, 50 years old.
