Sexual violence in Alaska is far worse than reported

FBI crime statistics show that the chance of a woman being raped in the state of Alaska is higher than in any other state in the union. But what about unreported sexual assaults? A new study conducted by the University of Alaska Anchorage's Justice Center found that 9 out of 10 rape cases go unreported.

The study offered more grim statistics:

* More than 44 percent of those surveyed have suffered physical violence in a close relationship, from slapping to severe beatings.

* More than 58 percent report that they've suffered either threats of violence or actual physical violence in an intimate relationship or sexual assault at some time in the lives.

* More than 37 percent report that they've suffered some form of sexual assault in their lives.

* More than 4 percent report that they've suffered sexual assault in the past year.

1. Refresher: Sarah Palin's position was that the rape victims should pay for their own rape kits
in order for them to prosecute their attackers.

2. I wonder why would it be worse in AK? I could see how it would be worse in red states, for sure.

And I bet a lot of sexual assault is unreported.

6. I don't believe that's true.
In fact, I don't believe that any state has more than a 10% edge for either gender. There may be spots of Alaska that have a high male-female ratio, but the state as a whole is closely matched.

7. Our weather contributes. Six weeks of darkness leads to a lot of
suicide and violence.

4. In such a Red State is this a surprise to anyone.
Republicans demonstrate all the time they have no Respect for women or people in general..The one major factor which pretty much is intrinsic to being a Republican is a complete lack of Respect for others..

11. our last vote was atypical. miller was such a douchebag that the
pug, Lisa Murkowski got voted in because of panic. Its a strange state here. We were dem before the oil. Outsiders, southerners and others came and the next thing you know the oil companies had locked it all up.
