Edited on Thu Jan-27-11 11:30 PM by sabrina 1
You can follow developments regarding the protests on Twitter http://twitter.com/#!/search?q=%23egypt here. It's hard to tell where everyone is posting from but in earlier tweets today people were posting instructions on ways to get around the government's block.

Several commenters are saying now that the Internet is being blocked ~ but the twitter feed is still going and it's not clear where they tweets are coming from.

Al Jazeera reporter apparently confirming that the Internet has been blocked in several cities:

@Dima_Khatib
Dima Khatib أنا ديمة
Al Jazeera correspondent is confirming that internet is down in Cairo and other cities of #Egypt #Jan25

Some tweets are expressing concerns that Government troops are going to become violent against the protestors and are asking for help from other countries to dissuade the Government from doing so.

More and more people saying that the Egypt is cutting off all access to the Internet.

Video posted in this tweet which is apparently graphic, shows the police shooting a protestor. I have not watched it.

Egypt unrest: Alert as mass protests loom

The protest organisers have urged people to come out in force, stressing that the religion of protesters is not relevant.

Late on Thursday, the Facebook and Twitter social websites had been disrupted along with mobile phone messaging, followed by loss of many internet services.

One internet user in Cairo, who wanted to remain anonymous, told the BBC the 3G was not working and SMS messages were not being received.

He said: "Tomorrow's protest may exceed Tuesday's numbers, and I think tension will be high. People are trying to stay safe and are moving around in groups."

These protests are expected to be the biggest yet, the article says. Elbarazei is in Egypt and has asked the Government to refrain from any violence against the protestors.

History is being made right now. Many people fear that Egypt may be repeat what happened in Tiananmen Square.

Now more people expressing fear that there will be a massacre with Egypt cut off from the world:

RT @Alshaheeed I am not exagerating:A massacre in #Egypt is about to take place if the world doesn't interfere #Jan25 http://apne.ws/eEC1I5

It would be very foolish of Mubarak to do such a thing. I can't imagine what could be gained from it.

This is reminding me of what happened in Mianmar/Burma. When the government cut off all communication with the outside world. We are talking about a dictatorship, so anything is possible, sadly.

Editing to add this Face Book plea which I saw earlier tweeted by the blogger. The FB post seems to be from two days ago, but the blogger tweeted it again today:

Egypt Gone Silent

Jan 25 Live

EGYPT has gone silent. And there is a credible threat by government thugs. We could wake up to a massacre. PLEASE urge the State Department to take action now. PLEASE FORWARD The government is asleep, and there's no way to get a hold of the white house, no switch board to leave a voice mail. HOWEVER, the state department has an operator that picks up, and I just asked to leave a voice mail regarding an international emergency. # just ask to leave a voice mail (202) 647-4000 Here's some suggested text if you'd like Dear Secretary Clinton, The Egyptian government has cut off internet and short messaging services in efforts to isolate the people, which makes it very likely that violence of massive proportions will take place in tomorrow’s protests. We strongly call on you to unequivocally condemn the actions of the Egyptian government. Failing to condemn the actions of the government and to pressure them to return internet and phone service is not a matter of supporting U.S national security, but is a matter of being a potential accomplice to crimes against humanity.

27. Okay, I just tried my Twitter link and it's working for me.
Btw, thank you for that quote. I watched the twitter feed for a while today and wasn't sure what to think about the fears being expressed.

But, after seeing so many people express the same fears, I think there is definitely reason to fear for those people.

It's not just to silence the tweets, but to silence the screams

 I am remembering the Monks in Mianmar ~ and the same kind of desperate pleas coming from inside Burman before the government cut them off.

32. Maybe just my browser.
Well, if one doesn't work for someone, they can try the other.

There is no way to keep up with them. 3000 tweets per minute or something close is what I'm seeing.

Yeah, I was thinking Burma, too. Among others.

2. Realize this has also spread to Jordan, and Jeda
(Yemen), and there are rumors of Syria and reports of Lebanon...

Tomorrow, after Friday prayers will get interesting.

I am doing the BBC posts, mostly since they have already got some of the rumors confirmed. But the twitter is also fascinating. Oh wait, I've been told here that this is just a fad and will pass, oh and a waste of time. How many revolts so far have governments fell the need to shut it down?

I had to go away for awhile ~ I apologize for that.

I also intended to include a Face Book plea to the U.S. but had to run before I had time. I will find it and post it in the comments.

Be right back and will try to include your link. Sorry mine didn't work, I thought it was working when I tried it.

62. Egyptian Stock Exchange (www.egyptse.com) is still alive at a Noor address.
Update (3:06 UTC)

One of the very few exceptions to this block has been Noor Group (AS20928), which still has 83 out of 83 live routes to its Egyptian customers, with inbound transit from Telecom Italia as usual. Why was Noor Group apparently unaffected by the countrywide takedown order? Unknown at this point, but we observe that the Egyptian Stock Exchange (www.egyptse.com) is still alive at a Noor address.

Its DNS A records indicate that it's normally reachable at 4 different IP addresses, only one of which belongs to Noor. Internet transit path diversity is a sign of good planning by the Stock Exchange IT staff, and it appears to have paid off in this case. Did the Egyptian government leave Noor standing so that the markets could open next week?

Spooky article - for the geeky/nerdy types. http://www.renesys.com/blog/2011/01/egypt-leaves-the-internet.shtml

what happens when you remove 80,000,000 people from the internet, shut down business, etc.

I've been reading tweets and articles so I've not yet had time to read it.

They've called out the army, and/or counterterrorism forces (I'm not sure if one in the same). Blocked communications; arrested activists...

If they slaughter their own people, do the markets go up or down? I wish I could think I was being too cynical.

Thanks President Obama. You have a chance to make history and you can't take a stand on the side of the people. Shameful.

We support dictators! And the world knows it. If there is a massacre in Egypt tomorrow, the U.S. will be hated around the world.

I hope he's on the phone to Mubarak letting him know that if one protestor is killed, the U.S. will make a statement in support of Elbaradei.

But I know, I'm just dreaming. But this is a defining moment for Obama. An historical moment. These are the events that test a leader and where he stands will be recorded in history.

139. Time to drag out that pretty speech he made 2 years ago in Cairo
I have come here to seek a new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world; one based upon mutual interest and mutual respect; and one based upon the truth that America and Islam are not exclusive, and need not be in competition. Instead, they overlap, and share common principles – principles of justice and progress; tolerance and the dignity of all human beings.

...

Make no mistake: we do not want to keep our troops in Afghanistan. We seek no military bases there.

...

The fourth issue that I will address is democracy.

I know there has been controversy about the promotion of democracy in recent years, and much of this controversy is connected to the war in Iraq. So let me be clear: no system of government can or should be imposed upon one nation by any other.

That does not lessen my commitment, however, to governments that reflect the will of the people. Each nation gives life to this principle in its own way, grounded in the traditions of its own people. America does not presume to know what is best for everyone, just as we would not presume to pick the outcome of a peaceful election. But I do have an unyielding belief that all people yearn for certain things: the ability to speak your mind and have a say in how you are governed; confidence in the rule of law and the equal administration of justice; government that is transparent and doesn't steal from the people; the freedom to live as you choose. Those are not just American ideas, they are human rights, and that is why we will support them everywhere.

There is no straight line to realize this promise. But this much is clear: governments that protect these rights are ultimately more stable, successful and secure. Suppressing ideas never succeeds in making them go away. America respects the right of all peaceful and law-abiding voices to be heard around the world, even if we disagree with them. And we will welcome all elected, peaceful governments – provided they govern with respect for all their people.

This last point is important because there are some who advocate for democracy only when they are out of power; once in power, they are ruthless in suppressing the rights of others. No matter where it takes hold, government of the people and by the people sets a single standard for all who hold power: you must maintain your power through consent, not coercion; you must respect the rights of minorities, and participate with a spirit of tolerance and compromise; you must place the interests of your people and the legitimate workings of the political process above your party. Without these ingredients, elections alone do not make true democracy.

 Absolute yawn.

juleswinsfield RT @virtualactivism: RT @jakalopee: http://bit.ly/f8hAwL It's official! Hang in there, trying to get a tor bridge up asap #Egypt #jan25

Definition:

Tor: Bridges

Bridge relays (or "bridges" for short) are Tor relays that aren't listed in the main Tor directory. Since there is no complete public list of them, even if your ISP is filtering connections to all the known Tor relays, they probably won't be able to block all the bridges. If you suspect your access to the Tor network is being blocked, you may want to use the bridge feature of Tor.

116. Oh how sad! You know, when I first started reading the
twitter feed and the pleas for help today, I wanted to think it was a few people over-reacting. But the more I watched it, the more people were begging for the world to intervene and so I posted the thread.

If this administration knows that the Mubarak government is going to murder its own people and stands by and lets it happen, they will have zero respect, they will be viewed as a government as bad as Mubarak's and will not be trusted by anyone again.

I hope that the people prevail. They are up against formidable forces, but the human spirit is amazing and they KNOW the world is on their side.

The U.S. should be ashamed! Europe too!

Thanks for this post, Catherina ~ I hope Anonymous can help in some way.

162. Egyptian Activists Plan
Egyptian Activists' Action Plan: Translated

Jan 27 2011, 7:40 PM ET By Alexis Madrigal 46

Egyptian activists have been circulating a kind of primer to Friday's planned protest. We were sent the plan by two separate sources and have decided to publish excerpts here, with translations into English. Over Twitter, we connected with a translator, who translated the document with exceptional speed.

What follows are side-by-side translations of nine pages from the 26-page pamphlet. They were translated over the last hour and pasted up in Photoshop to give you an idea of what's in the protest plan. While the plan itself contains specifics about what protesters might do, these excerpts show how one might equip oneself for clashes with riot police. Egyptian security forces have repeatedly beaten protesters as the level of violent repression of demonstrations has ratcheted upwards. For more context on the pamphlet itself, the Guardian UK ran a summary of it earlier today.

As you'll read, the creators of the pamphlet explicitly asked that the pamphlet not be distributed on Twitter or Facebook, only through email or other contacts. We're publishing this piece of ephemera because we think it's a fascinating part of the historical record of what may end up becoming a very historic day for Egypt.

The pages included are 1, 2, 3, 4, 10, 12, 13, 22, and 26. You can click to (roughly) double the size of the images.

163. The Revolution Will Not Be Tweeted... in Egypt (Post from Inside Egypt via the Old-Fashioned Phone)
Hosni Mubarak is 82 years old. He has been Egypt’s absolute ruler for three decades. He is America’s biggest ally in the Middle East. He has probably never really learnt how to use a computer. I cannot imagine that he tweets or even fully comprehends how this most omnipresent of social networks works... Negma will head out in a few hours to the Omar Makram mosque in downtown Cairo. The mosque is just off the now famous Tahrir Square. She has not been to a mosque in years and neither have her many Zamalek girlfriends who will be joining her with all of the supplies they have been collecting in the last 48 hours. They know they are not alone and will be joining thousands.

Negma has had no Internet since about 4 pm Eastern time on Thursday. Her blackberry messenger went down hours before as did Facebook and Twitter sporadically. Most friends I could only reach on the phone today felt that it was almost like Hosni Mubarak’s goons were doing a practice run all day to test if they could manage to shut off the entire internet. They finally seem to have succeeded.

As she is talking to me, she puts the phone on hold for a brief moment. A friend has just called and says that she has heard that Mubarak’s regime will be shutting off the water and electricity on Friday as well. It is just the beginning of a long night of rumors in Cairo... #

Internet has been very spotty all day—its almost like they were practising with Facebook and twitter and now succeeded
#

The big protest on Thursday was at the downtown Lawyers Syndicate. The police forced the few hundred protestors into the building
#

We heard that the army was out in Suez after they burnt a police station and a fire station there
#

Thousands of protestors started marching from al Haram in Giza near the pyramids towards Tahrir square—it’s a very long walk
#

There were more than a thousand protestors at Ramses square
#

Don’t assume that this is a twitter and Facebook “revolution”—they have been useful yes, but the majority of Egyptians DO NOT have the internet or smartphones. However the “leaders” of the movement have used twitter to communicate details to each other about which streets are blocked, where there is tear gas, their own coordinates and then also to the outside world with the common hash tags of #Jan25 and #Egypt.A lot of the tweeting has also been in Arabic but now “please know that no one is tweeting anymore, Parvez-Khalaas."
#

My friend saw plainclothes police pouring gasoline on cars parked in the downtown area. They will later probably set them on fire and say we were violent rioters in order to have an excuse to kill us
#

Now people are saying that “they” will shut off electricity and water before the Friday prayers as well...

*

The Copts (the Christian minority) are saying that while we pray, they will watch our backs. They will wait outside the mosques to look out for our safety-“this is why I love my country so much more now”
*

I am so worried. People were also angry that Al Jazeera was not reporting properly and focusing more on their “world exclusive leak of Palestine Papers”
*

I hope it does not get worse. It will, if we fail this time.
*

I don’t like Baradei and it is so irritating to have all the ignorant Western journalists give him so much attention—I know he has some support with rich people and with middle class youth—but people are questioning why he suddenly decided to return the country three days after we started getting killed. What has he done for Egpyt in the last thirty years to deserve to lead us? He is no better than the Brotherhood. They are all “fucked up”

I ask her if Baradei practices Islam light like the Brotherhood now does? She laughs. The line gets disconnected at that laugh... http://www.al-bab.com/blog/2011/blog1101d.htm

184. Just found a State Dept. Tweet from PJ Crowley
He's the guy who was interviewed on Al Jazeera yesterday and would not address the people's grievances about living under a dictatorship. He kept repeating that the people were expressing some frustration with the economy. The AJ reporter kept pressing him to talk about torture and oppression and the lack of freedom, but he wouldn't answer.

Here are a couple of his tweets:

Philip J. Crowley
We are concerned that communication services, including the Internet, social media and even this #tweet, are being blocked in #Egypt.

We are closely monitoring the situation in #Egypt. We continue to urge authorities to show restraint and allow peaceful protests to occur.

PJCrowley Philip J. Crowley

Same old platitudinous diatribe. He can't pretend anymore that Mubarak is of use in the ME peace talks now that Wikileaks has posted the cables.

Mubarak is being encouraged by Israel to use violence. Crowley should be asked how come the U.S. is saying one thing and Israel another. And who will Mubarak listen to? Maybe I'll go to his twitter account and ask him. It's on twitter so he can't say he doesn't know.

180. Okay. Wikileaks has started posting the Egypt cables ~
http://wikileaks.ch/cable/2010/02/10DOHA71.html

These cables show that the Mubarak government was acting as a broker in the ME peace talks, but did not want to accomplish anything since their only usefulness to the U.S. was BEING a broker.

I just skimmed a few of them so far. But it's clear that everyone knew that Mubarak was just playing games and was not at all serious about brokering anything.

If that is the case, and it seems to be true from the cables, then how can the U.S. government pretend that they are so important to the peace process?

I am curious to see how this will be reported in the U.S. media, in light of the Obama administration's stand on Egypt right now.

It looks like there is nothing for the U.S. to lose by siding with the people. So why continue the pretense? Mubarak is useless to the U.S. IF they are serious about a true peace process.

I think this is headed to all out war. The US, to retain any shred of dignity and control, is going to physically extricate Mubarak (or have an ally do it) then try that same trick the French tried on the Tunisians of hypocritically congratualating them for their astounding victory while trying to install new puppets.

I'd wager everthing I own on this.

I'll also wager we're in serious talks with ElBaradei right now, thinking we can depend on him and push that compromise on the people.

I just realized I answered your question as if it were "Will we see a successful revolution?". Upon rereading your post, I think I misunderstood. Did I?

194. Oh, I hope you are right. I don't think Egypt will fall for the
trick of installing a puppet either. It didn't work in Tunisia. If they take Mubarak out of the country that's all that is needed.

I wonder if the U.S. had anything to do with Elbaradei returning? I had good feelings about him, but mainly because I remember him as head of the IAEA and refusing to let Bush get away with the Niger Uranium lie. He's apparently not all that popular in Egypt from what I've been reading, although you can't tell from just a few tweets.

As to my question, I was responding to the tweet 'will there be a revolution in Egypt tomorrow' ~ and I am wondering how we would know since they have cut themselves off from the world, or so it seems.

196. We'll know. They're making sure we know. Mubarak can't shut down the net
He can pull a few plugs but they'll find ways around it.

Every kid in Gaza probably gave them a tutorial already.

Sabrina, I'm going to start another thread called It Has Begun. This one is too long and this is a good cut off.

Great video of the protesters chasing the police away http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uc000YDVY5o

YOU GO GUYS! Solidarity.

Ahmed Moor spent one tumultuous afternoon with protesters in central Cairo, where he found that the 'Arabs are alive.'

Tens of thousands of Egyptians took to the streets calling for President Hosni Mubarak to resign

The skies in Cairo were gray and a stultifying mist enveloped Tahrir Square when I got there on Tuesday. It was about 10:00 in the morning, and the protesters I had come to join were not around. But there were riot police on every corner, blocking off all of the side streets.

The notorious mukhabarat – the secret police – were around too. It is easy to identify them; they are invariably thuggish looking and they do a good job of making themselves look conspicuous. I guess they are not so secret, but they do not have to be in this police state.

Within five minutes of arriving, two members of the mukhabarat approached me. They did not identify themselves as anyone with authority and began to interrogate me straight away. I was standing in front of the enormous, dark Mogamma bureaucratic building. It was gifted to the Egyptians in 1950 by the Soviet government, and that is exactly what it looks like. The building was built to project power and permanence, but it has been neglected and now only projects decay.

...

A chant went up: Hurriya! Hurriya! Hurriya! - Freedom! Freedom! Freedom!

I was jubilant.

190. Great pic, that was yesterday I think.
Here's the tweet about the solidarity protests around the ME:

@charleswhite3
Charles White
Protests happening all over the #MiddleEast is solidarity with #Egypt even in #Doha!

People of the world unite!

The Corps have been united for decades and divided countries against each other. Now, people are uniting too and there are more of us than of them. I hated that they tried to make enemies of us and the people of Iraq and Afghanistan. They were never our enemies, the Iranians either.

I wish we knew what was going on ~

192. I hated that too. Still hate it. None of those people are my enemies.
My enemies are the shock and awe crowd, the corporate thieves, the wall street crooks, and corrupt politicians.

How dare they try to make us hate simple fellow brothers and sisters on the same hard highway of life? How dare they!

197. I was just reading those tweets
and was going to post them to show that people still seem to be able to access Twitter?

They are just a few minutes old and they seem to be coming from Egypt. There is another one that says they have a friend in Egypt who still has some access.

What would be wonderful would be if the police did what they did in Tunisia and joined the protestors. They won't do it until they know for sure that the people have won.

Imagine what will happen to those people if the government prevails. I don't even want to think about it!

That gives me chills. I don't blame them for being scared ~ and it seems they are still able to communicate!

The Guardian has live updates ~ I wonder if they have any reporters there.

200. I can't believe it but they are covering this story
pretty extensively now on TV. I think that is a good sign. Maybe an acceptance that Mubarak has to go?

The markets are affected and I guess that's the most important thing :eyes:
