Something to make you feel safer
School district to post signs banning weapons

Visitors to Iowa City School District-owned buildings will soon see signs prohibiting weapons.

The Iowa City School Board, without a vote, opted to allow Super-intendent Steve Murley to post signs in district-owned buildings that are not schools, which already are covered by federal law, that weapons are not allowed.

Board president Patti Fields said Tuesday night that the possibility of people carrying weapons into district buildings, such as the district's headquarters and tech center, have become an issue following violence in other school districts across the country. Iowa also became a shall-issue weapon state Jan. 1, loosening rules on people being issued weapon permits.

Murley said other schools in the Urban Education Network, a group composed of the state's eight largest school districts including Iowa City, has its own security measures, including having only one entrance available for visitors and requiring them to wear badges.

Post signs like this and you can be sure that the person wanting to walk in and shoot people will think twice about it.

Next up, signs in banks that say "It is illegal to hold up this bank, so don't" - and BOOM no one will do so ever again.

1. Signage will help the law abiding follow the rules, but it won't make anyone safer from intentional

acts of violence.

I know you know this SS, but still I wanted to write out.

;)

7. I don't want law abiding people bringing weapons near a school, either
Guns have been known to go off unintentionally.

2. That will not prevent many crimes, obviously, but that is not the point.

The point is that anyone caught with a gun on the premises will not be able to claim he was unaware that weapons weren't allowed.

And the government would be able to charge such a person with a crime even if he didn't actually succeed in shooting anyone.

8. I don't think educators should have to worry about
guns, on top of everything else they have to worry about.

3. I think the signs should be more to the point....Cross this line with a weapon and you will go....
to jail.

6. Post the rules.
Then no one can claim they didn't know better.
