My daughter works at a grocery store and just got home
On Superbowl Sunday.
Apparently, the Lone Star Card went down today for 5 hours statewide.
She said one lady literally threatened her because she couldn't take her food stamps. WTF?
She told her she had a Superbowl party planned and that my daughter was ruining it!

Daughter said the place was a madhouse all day and crazy because of the Lone Star card malfunction...and that the manager asked her to stay later...but she declined the offer, lol.

1. We ran out and got food yesterday and are hiding today.
Retail work around any major event is like a stint in Hell.

49. Regardless of the volume, by labor laws, your daughter is owed breaks.
I think retail managers forget that, and they can get called to the mat for it.

We live in one of the poorest areas of Texas. Many folks around here have food stamps. It's a big deal when it goes down.

43. How would you know that the person was white Horse?
Did you ask your daughter about that detail from the story or did she just offer that info knowing you would probably be interested in knowing? Is that the kind of detail you and your daughter would normally feel comfortable discussing during an average conversation? Just curious how it became interjected into the conversation?

45. Actually, I went and asked her
after the Cadillac story was put out there.
If I had thought about it being associated with that particular meme, I never would have even posted it.
Race didn't come up in the initial conversation--just the fact that the state picked a lousy day to do maintenance on its servers and how crowded they were.
Oh, and all the beer they sold.

23. because i found the OP somewhat odd
and I like to be sarcastic.

you see, i understand that the the raygun era welfare cadillac quote/meme was and is pure rot.

in other words, i'm sure there is still plenty of stuff for you to get outraged about, but this isn't one of them.

because it is sarcasm in response to what seemed an odd OP.

why would someone point out that a food stamp recipient is buying stuff for their super bowl party (if it even happened)?

that is what you should be scratching your head and stomping your little outraged feet about.

36. That sarcasm thing helps of course

though I get the joke.

It is telling that that one lady's actions were described, because most of the asshole behavior i see in public is most certainly NOT displayed by the food stamp recipients. Quite the opposite....

39. Possibly true
But because of OUR particular economic demographics (again I reiterate--one of the poorest areas of Texas), that is kind of thrown out the window. I would almost say that the majority of folks around here are on some kind of government assistance.
Also, let me be fair and say, that there is a LARGE number of Tea Partiers in this area--with a definite republican majority.

Not to draw ANY conclusions...but...that could be WHY this certain person was so particularly nasty?

44. I was trying to find the post that I did
during the election cycle, but I couldn't.
I was working a local event for our State Rep and was accosted by one of the Tea Partiers...very belligerent and angry...poking her finger in my face, yelling at me, trying to knock our table over, etc. Every question she asked had an answer, but not the answer she was looking for. The woman seemed legitimately crazy. In fact, I won't do any more local events because of it. They are very scary in these parts.

46. For a lot of Teabaggers, I suspect
Edited on Sun Feb-06-11 08:21 PM by Tsiyu

their "party' is merely a cover for their sociopathic natures.

They can hate everybody, act superior to everybody, use violent rhetoric and bully people - then claim it's all due to their being "patriots."

They love themselves, and cloak their self-obsession in the flag and "love of country."

And they are drawn to the Koch Brothers-financed Teabag Party like flies on manure...it legitimizes their anti-social tendencies...

41. FWIW, I didn't take the OP like that at all - it sounds like the poster's daughter had
a crap day and the Lone Star shut down was why. If people had been pissed off because the freezer failed and all the ice cream melted, I presume that's what the OP would have recounted...

Am I missing something here? Is there a reason to jump to the conclusion that the OP was slamming food stamp recipients?

8. Does anyone plan their parties?
They knew how long ago when the SB would be?

It's just like here in Indiana. There are no liquor sales on Sunday and they want to change the law to allow Sunday sales. I don't have a problem with liquor sales on Sunday but their only reasoning is so that customers can buy it on Sunday in Indiana instead of neighboring states. IMO anyone that would drive across state line to buy it every time are incompetent. They would have more time to do other things if they bought their liquor during the week even Saturday.

26. Since we've reduced our workers to breadcrumbs anything a tiny bit better
seems like a dream. If they made a decent wage they wouldn't worry about double-time, they would value their mental health more as the French do.

But you know that mental health is a distant thought when it comes to juggling monthly bills. :(

33. On top of your ice, snow etc.
that kept people from the store most Food stamps are once a month, around the first. Maybe not only were they hoping to have some stuff for a super bowl party (might only be the family and just a way of putting it) they may of been in need of food. Many run out of staples before their next allotment. Either way they shouldn't threaten the cashier. Best answer for her to give would be that they should contact the governor. Course wouldn't put it past him to have to system taken down on purpose. Hope she is realxing and enjoying the rest of her night.

according to my Frito Rep Super Bowl Sunday is the single biggest chip sales day of the year.

It's been a tough week overall, snow/ice, first week of the month & Super Bowl Sunday, so we sold a few groceries this week.....

40. Weather affected shipments TO grocery stores as well as shoppers
Many people didn't feel safe going to grocery stores until yesterday. Ice was TERRIBLE until Saturday morning and that was with about 6" of snow topping it off on Friday. As the nation has seen this week, this is freakishly bad weather for this area. We just have no equipment to deal with it. The only salt we ever have is Morton's table salt. :) My husband lived in NY state most of his life and never saw ice this thick up there. He couldn't break it up with a steel shovel.

Many of the grocery stores ran out of items during the week because trucks couldn't bring shipments to the stores because of the ice.

I'm not really surprised lots of people were shopping today for the super bowl. Yesterday was the first day we could clean up the ice and snow. We honestly didn't think much about super bowl eats until this morning. The last week was just a mess. (I'm in Dallas, by the way.)
