Egyptian anti-government protesters sleep on the tires of a military tank stationed on Tahrir (Liberation) Square, which for the past two weeks has been the center of a sit-in protest by thousands of Egyptians demanding the government step down from power. Protesters created a human shield and barricades to fend off pro-Mubarak supporters from getting into the square and to prevent the military from an overnight attack to clear the square from the protesters.

Hosni Mubarak is to leave Egypt for medical treatment in Germany, at which time he'll give up the Egyptian presidency, according to Der Spiegel.

The report suggests the plan — organized by the U.S. government and elements within the Egyptian regime as a way to end the political chaos in Egypt — is for Mubarak to head to a clinic near Baden-Baden in Germany.

Mubarak, hospitalized in Germany last March, is rumored to be suffering from cancer. The plan would offer the 82-year-old a "dignified departure," according to the Der Spiegel report.

Over the weekend, the New York Times reported on secret talks to that effect were being held between the U.S. government and Egyptian military officials.

Egypt Releases Google Executive, Company Says

Wael Ghonim, the Google marketing executive and Egypt revolt hero who disappeared there more than a week ago, was released on Monday by Egyptian authorities, according to Google.

The company confirmed his release in an email statement and on Twitter. “It is a huge relief that Wael Ghonim has been released,” the company said in an email. “We send our best wishes to him and his family.”

Before his family lost contact with him on Jan. 28, Mr. Ghonim had written an ominous post on his @ghonim Twitter page that troubled friends and family, raising concerns about his whereabouts: “Pray for #Egypt. Very worried as it seems that government is planning a war crime tomorrow against people. We are all ready to die #Jan25.”

Mr. Ghonim, the head of marketing for Google in the Middle East and North Africa, is based in Dubai. On his Twitter bio, he describes himself as “Constantly changing. Serious Joker. Internet Addict. Love challenging status quo. “ There has been much speculation about what role Mr. Ghonim played behind the scenes in helping human rights activists to harness the power of technology with the Facebook and YouTube campaigns against police abuses.
