Egyptian anti-government protesters sleep on the tires of a military tank stationed on Tahrir (Liberation) Square, which for the past two weeks has been the center of a sit-in protest by thousands of Egyptians demanding the government step down from power. Protesters created a human shield and barricades to fend off pro-Mubarak supporters from getting into the square and to prevent the military from an overnight attack to clear the square from the protesters.

Foreign Islamists Get Little Support in Egypt

BY FARNAZ FASSIHI IN BEIRUT AND MATT BRADLEY IN CAIRO

Iran and its ally Hezbollah have been quick to claim kinship with the mass demonstrations in Egypt, describing them as part of a "regional Islamic awakening," but the reaction from Egypt's own Islamic movement has been lukewarm.

The latest endorsement of the protesters came Monday when Seyed Hassan Nasrallah, leader of the political and militant Shiite group Hezbollah, gave a televised speech to a crowd of several hundred supporters gathered at an auditorium in south Beirut waving Egyptian and Hezbollah flags.

"The resistance Egyptians demonstrate does not differ from the resistance of Hezbollah during the 2006 war with Israel

University professors will gather tomorrow, Tuesday, 12:30pm in front of their club headquarters, and will stage a march in support of the revolution, joining the protesters in Tahrir.

Also, tomorrow 12 noon, journalists will gather at their syndicate, in an emergency meeting to lobby for impeaching their state-backed syndicate head, Makram Mohamed Ahmed.

And more importantly, on Wednesday 11am, the three independent unions we have in Egypt (Property Tax Collectors, Health Technicians and Pensioners’ Federation) will demonstrate in front of the headquarters of the state backed Egyptian Federation of Trade Unions, in Galaa Street, calling for the prosecution of the federation head on corruption charges, lifting all restrictions on establishing free unions. The civil servants will then mobilize a march to Tahrir Square in support of the revolution.

Already today, Monday, the employees at the Workers’ University in Nasr City, held Mostafa Mongui, the vice president of the Egyptian Federation of Trade Unions

THESE ARE FANTASTIC DEVELOPMENTS. We need to take the fight to the factories and workplaces. Only a general strike will bring this regime down once and for all…

Wael @Ghonim on Dream TV now via @Phat8m

See picture of Wael @Ghonim on TV right now http://yfrog.com/h5ea8fjfbj

Wael @Ghonim to Dream TV: I tricked my employer so I can attend the protests in Egypt. I am not a traitor. I don't need anything from any1

My God he is crying. This is so emotional

Wael @Ghonim to Dream TV: I am not a hero. I was only used the keyboard, the real heroes are the ones on the ground. Those I can't name.

Wael @Ghonim to Dream TV: This is the season where people use the word traitor against each other. I wasn't abused, I was jailed, kidnapped

Wael @Ghonim to Dream TV: I met some really intellectual people in jail, they actually thought that we were traitors, working for others

Wael @Ghonim to Dream TV: If I was a traitor I would have stayed by the swimming pool in my house in the UAE

Wael @Ghonim to Dream TV: What are called the "facebook youth" went out in their tens of thousands on January 25th, talk to them.

Wael @Ghonim to Dream TV: This is the era where people who have good intentions are considered traitors.

Wael @Ghonim to Dream TV: My wife was going to divorce me because I didn't spend time with her, and now they call me a traitor

Wael @Ghonim to Dream TV: I spent all my time on computer working for my country. I wasn't optimistic on the 25th but now I can't believe it

Wael @Ghonim to Dream TV: Thanks to everyone who tried to get me out of jail. (my God this is so emotional)

Wael @Ghonim: It's Haram (sinful, not right) for my father to lose his sight in one eye and now is at risk of losing it in the other

Wael @Ghonim: I kept thinking "are people thinking of me?" I was wondering if my family knew where I was, my wife, dad, mother.

Wael @Ghonim: I am proud of what I did. This is not the time to settle scores. Although I have people I want to settle scores with myself.

Wael @Ghonim: This is not the time to split the pie & enforce ideologies. The secret to the success of the facebook page was use of surveys

Wael @Ghonim: I met with the Minister of Interior today. He was sat like any other citizen. He spoke to me like an equal. I respected that

Wael @Ghonim: The youth on the streets made Dr Hossam Badrawi (General Secretary of NDP) drive me to my house today

It's on a commercial break now. This is the most emotional interview I've watched in a long time. The translation doesn't do it justice.

Wael @Ghonim: They transfered me to state security, it's a kidnapping. On Thursday night, at 1am I was with a friend, a colleague from work

Wael @Ghonim: I was taking a taxi, suddenly four people surrounded the car, I yelled "Help me, Help me" I was blindfolded then taken away

Wael @Ghonim: I will say this as it is: nothing justifies kidnapping, you can arrest me by the law, I am not a drug dealer or terrorist

Wael @Ghonim: Inside I met people who loved Egypt (State Security people) but their methods & mine are not the same

Wael @Ghonim: I pay these guys salaries from my taxes, I have the right to ask the ministers where my money is going, this is our country

Wael @Ghonim: I believe that if things get better those (good state security people he met) will serve Egypt well.

Wael @Ghonim: Don't stand in our way, we are going to serve Egypt. I saw a film director get slapped, they told him "You will die here" Why?

Wael @Ghonim: Now they want to have an agreement with me when they are in a position of weakness. I am not a hero, I am a normal person

Wael @Ghonim: I was the admin of the page but others paid for it. We are dreamers (says it in English).

Wael @Ghonim: There were 300 fake registrations on my facebook page, all negative comments, about how we were allegedly being paid

Wael @Ghonim: The NDP is got this country to where it is. You can create a new party. It looks like I might be kidnapped again after this

Wael @Ghonim: Badrawi told me we took all the bad people out from the NDP. I told him I don't want to see the logo of the NDP ever again

Wael @Ghonim: What happened to me was a crime but I still thank those who tried to got me out, I am an educated person, I have a family

Wael @Ghonim: I was chatting with Ahmad Maher of 6th of April Youth Movement about the Jan 25 protests but he didn't know who I was.

Wael @Ghonim: I cried when I heard that there are people who died, officers and protesters, this is my country.

Wael @Ghonim: I told them we don't want any NDP logo on the streets.

Wael @Ghonim: I told the Interior Minister - I was upset - I told him I will go in the car with Hossam Badrawi but without an NDP logo

Wael @Ghonim: Please everyone, enough rumours. Enough.

Wael @Ghonim: Even when the Muslim Brotherhood decided to take part it was their choice to do so. This belongs to Egyptian youth

Wael @Ghonim: There was no Muslim Brotherhood presence in organising these protests, it was all spontaneous, voluntary.

Wael @Ghonim: My wife is an American, I can apply for US citizenship but I didn't, not even the lottery. Many people want to leave though.

Wael @Ghonim: They wanted details, information. "Are the people who planned this outsiders?" We didn't do anything wrong, this was an appeal

Wael @Ghonim: The treatment was very good, they knew I was a good Egyptian. I was blindfolded for 12 days, I didn't see their faces.

Wael @Ghonim: The interrogators wanted to know if outsiders were involved. I convinced them this was a purely Egyptian movement.

Wael @Ghonim: I can't claim I know what happened when I was inside. I didn't know anything until one day before I left.

Wael @Ghonim: We are a beautiful people. Please everybody, this is not a time to settle scores, this is a time to build our country.

Wael @Ghonim: We have to restore dignity to all Egyptians. We have to end corruption. No more theft. Egyptians are good people.

Wael @Ghonim: I wrote an appeal to the president Egypt on Jan 25. I told the Minister of Interior we have two problems 1- We don't talk.

Wael @Ghonim: Everyone asked me "How did you do this?" The Interior Minister told me he was only a minister for 8 days.

Wael @Ghonim: There were several men in the room with me & the Minister of Interior. I asked him if I can speak about this he said as u wish

Wael @Ghonim: The Egyptian State TV channels didn't portray the truth, that is why people watch the private channels now

Wael @Ghonim: I told the Interior Minister if I stripped naked & told people that I was beaten even without marks they would believe me.

Wael @Ghonim: I told the Interior Minister we have two problems 1- we don't talk to each other, this must be solved, 2- There is no trust.

Wael @Ghonim: I was told that people died, one day before I was released.

Wael Ghonim breaks down on TV. http://yfrog.com/h3wm1ouj

Wael @Ghonim's last words: I want to tell families who lost their sons this is not our fault. This is the fault of those clinging to power.

God I think I am going to cry. They are showing pictures of young people who died during the protests. Wael breaks down crying.

He just walked off the screen

God now I am crying

Damn it this is the first time I cry in a while. I won't tweet again tonight.

The Hopeful Network
Meet the young cyberactivists who've been planning Egypt's uprising for years.
BY MARYAM ISHANI | FEBRUARY 7, 2011

CAIRO — Most of the world got a crash course in the Egyptian opposition movement this month, as mass protests broke out on the streets of Cairo. From all appearances, the movement emerged organically in the wake of the overthrow of the government in nearby Tunisia, as hundreds of thousands of angry citizens turned out to demand President Hosni Mubarak immediately step down. Several days after the marches began, former International Atomic Energy Agency chief and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mohamed ElBaradei arrived on the scene to give the marchers in the streets a nominal leader and media-savvy public face. And shortly after that, Egypt's largest opposition group, the Muslim Brotherhood, joined in, lending its political heft to the movement.

But the groundwork for the Egyptian uprising was set well before these high-profile figures and organizations became involved. Nearly three years ago, a group of youth activists with a strong sense of Internet organizing and more than a little help from abroad was preparing for a grassroots, high-tech opposition movement.

In early 2008, Ahmed Salah and Ahmed Maher, young members of the Kefaya ("Enough") opposition group that made a strong run against Mubarak in the 2005 presidential election, branched off and formed a group they called the April 6 Youth Movement. The group took its name from the date of the first demonstration it supported -- a workers' strike planned for April 6, 2008, in el-Mahalla el-Kubra, an important town for the Egyptian textile industry. To galvanize the strike effort, April 6 activists used Facebook, Twitter, blogs, and other new-media tools to report events, alert participants about security situations, and provide legal assistance to those rounded up by state security forces.

But from the beginning, the group's founders were anticipating a far more critical date: the Nov. 28, 2010, parliamentary elections. With memories of Iran's post-election protests still fresh in their minds, the young activists hoped that the vote -- sure to be marred by ballot stuffing, bought votes, and thuggery -- would spark a mass movement that would bring Mubarak's nearly 30-year reign to an end.

Y'all are really being way too nice about this. Get those judges who marched with you to draw up charges against Mubarak now. Try him and either jail him or execute him.

WikiLeaks: Israel's secret hotline to the man tipped to replace Mubarak
The new vice-president of Egypt, Omar Suleiman, is a long-standing favourite of Israel's who spoke daily to the Tel Aviv government via a secret "hotline" to Cairo, leaked documents disclose.

Omar Suleiman, left, was Israel's preferred candidate to replace President Mubarak according to secret cables released to The Daily Telegraph by WikiLeaks

By Tim Ross, Christopher Hope, Steven Swinford and Adrian Blomfield 9:25PM GMT 07 Feb 2011

Mr Suleiman, who is widely tipped to take over from Hosni Mubarak as president, was named as Israel's preferred candidate for the job after discussions with American officials in 2008.
As a key figure working for Middle East peace, he once suggested that Israeli troops would be "welcome" to invade Egypt to stop weapons being smuggled to Hamas terrorists in neighbouring Gaza.
The details, which emerged in secret files obtained by WikiLeaks and passed to The Daily Telegraph, come after Mr Suleiman began talks with opposition groups on the future for Egypt's government.
On Saturday, Mr Suleiman won the backing of Hillary Clinton, the US Secretary of State, to lead the "transition" to democracy after two weeks of demonstrations calling for President Mubarak to resign.
