Wisconsin DEM Senator ISN'T Biting: "The longer they hold my check, the more they look like dicks."
Edited on Thu Feb-24-11 09:07 PM by kpete
UPDATE 19, Thursday, Feb. 24, 4:35 p.m. CST: To lure the 14 in-hiding Wisconsin state Senate Democrats back to Wisconsin, Republicans passed a rule on Tuesday http://www.620wtmj.com/news/local/116682264.html preventing any lawmaker who misses two or more sessions from getting paid by direct deposit. Absentee senators can only get paid by picking up their checks in the Wisconsin capitol building on the senate floor during session. Choking off the Democrats' modest salary, the Republican thinking goes, could force Senate Democrats to return to the legislature.

At least one Democrat, though, isn't biting. "I'm not thinking twice about it, to be honest," said one Democratic state senator, who requested anonymity to speak openly, when asked about the GOP's ploy. "The longer they hold my check, the more they look like dicks."

The 14 Senate Democrats fled the state in order to prevent a vote on Wisconsin Republican Governor Scott Walker's controversial budget bill, which would eliminate collective bargaining rights for most public-sector unions in the Badger State. The Democrats left the state on February 18, around the time massive protests organized by labor groups erupted in Madison in opposition the budget bill. The Democrats are holed up in Illinois awaiting any kind of breakthrough in the budget debate before they return. But it's been a productive six days for them as well: Together they've raised more than $650,000 since they began their out-of-state standoff.

8. The *more* they look like dicks? Either you look like a dick or you don't.
They've been looking like dicks for quite awhile now. I think there is a very good reason for that. If it looks like a dick, quacks likes a ....oh wait a minute, I have my vowels mixed up. Oh what the hell, it still works. They're just dicks.

will they be treated the same way? What if a Republican lawmaker is diagnosed with cancer and is out for several weeks? Will their families be similarly punished?

14. Sorry, this won't fly with the public
If you want to make some grand protest, then be prepared to pay the costs. That's what MLK taught us.

Whining about not getting paid while you're not showing up for work, no matter how principled the reason, is not going to get you any sympathy from the Wisconsin taxpayers.

17. He's not "whining about not getting paid,"
he's saying he doesn't give a shit about not getting paid. Big difference actually. Makes the Repigs look petty and dickish and will actually fly just dandy with the public.

41. My agenda
is to make sure that collective bargaining rights are not lost in WI, or anywhere else. I just know how some whiny comments about paychecks, along with a slang genital reference, are going to play with the mushy middle. No doubt, the reich wing has sent out emails with it to people who are still on the fence about this.

We need to win independents to our side these days, there are not enough progressives to achieve our goals without them.

23. You might want to consider reading the message again.
Since when did "I'm not thinking twice about it (in reference to being paid), to be honest," translate into whining about not getting paid? I don't think the words mean what you think they mean.

30. Read the quote that's in the subject line of the OP
Talking about the other side being dicks, while you're avoiding showing up in the capital is not gonna cut it with the people paying the salaries behind those checks.

We've done a pretty good job of keeping this whole debate 50-50, about half the public supports us, and half buys the BS from the reich wing media. We're just waiting for something to tip that balance, and if we simply keep up the pressure, it will indeed tip to our side.

But even getting into discussions about paychecks, or cheese boycotts (as was popular here about two weeks ago) is counterproductive. Our side needs to stay on focus, the issue is ONLY the right to collective bargaining. If we let the media move us off that issue, our enemies are on the way to winning.

35. Subject line is just part of a larger quotation.
Sorry, your interpretation is still flawed. You claim he was whining about his pay and he was not. Pretty simple stuff there.

38. Perhaps you and I have different interpretations
of what it means when a politician tells a reporter that his opponents are dicks. It guaranteed that the paycheck would be the leading quote in the article.

We need people on our side to stay focused on the central issue of the right to collectively bargain, and not get off on all of the silly sideshow stuff. So far, practically everybody on our side has managed to keep this on the high road, as far as what our message is. I don't think this unnamed politician did that.

31. You missed it
I have the capability of reading this through the eyes of someone who is in the mushy middle about all of this, I've been around enough of those kinds of people to know what grabs their eye. We need the middle to come down squarely on our side, and articles about who's the bigger dick when it comes to a paycheck are not keeping focus on the central issue, which is the right to collectively bargain for the terms of one's employment.

and yes it's true, they didn't show up for work. Maybe they shouldn't get paid, unless they are using sick or vacation time, things they can than the unions for.

On the other hand when you miss work does your boss call up the STATE POLICE to come to your house to drag you to work in handcuffs? I think for now I'll stay on the side of Democracy.
