6. I have the impression that Boehner is tall
So he may be sad and pathetic, but he's not little. More to the point, why use "little" as a pejorative?

8. Perhaps because "little man" is a common idiom having nothing to do with height?

14. Little in spirit. Little in compassion. Little in moral stature.
Is that what disturbs you most about this? The use of the word "little"? If so, I think you're missing the point. :eyes:

15. Er, I believe in this context it is general taken to mean "inconsequential"
It doesn't typically refer to stature in this case.

That said, as a sad and pathetic person, I take umbrage at the fact that some of my best qualities are being used in such an insulting fashion.

23. +1
I'm with you on that. So many cultural prejudices show up in language - and people who aren't the target of those prejudices are always quick to dismiss a call for language sensitivity "over reaction".

I hate for instance how often the word 'dark' is used to mean evil, or 'little' or 'small' is used with derision to mean unworthy.

Screw Boehner and have him lie in state on the Senate side.

21. Here's what Fox News is saying.
Note: Please ignore multiple errors in Fox News story. :eyes: Somebody needs a proofreader.

In any event, apparently it's a bipartisan effort to get the honor for Buckles.

http://politics.blogs.foxnews.com/2011/03/03/boehner-request-arlington-ceremony-buckles

Boehner, along with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), want to honor Buckles, but not at the Capitol. Boehner's office says the speaker and Reid are reaching out to Defense Secretary Robert Gates to salute Buckles at the amphitheater at Arlington National Cemetery. Sens. Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) want to honor Buckles during a ceremony in the Capitol Rotunda.

Rockefeller's resolution would authorize Buckles to like in "honor" in the Rotunda. But House Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman Jeff Miller (R-FL) wrote a letter to Boehner earlier this week, requesting that Buckles that Buckles lie in "state" in the Rotunda.

25. Boehner's continuing a Republican tradition,
In 1918 returning WWI vets were treated very shabbliy by the then Republican congress.

It was customary after a war to give vets returning to civilian life some sort of stipend to get their lives back in order. Congress granted this with one cruel stipulation. These WWI vets would have to wait until 1945 to collect their bonus.
