Kilauea volcano crater collapses in Hawaii
It's all cracking open!

VOLCANO, Hawaii – A new vent has opened at one of the world's most active volcanoes, sending lava shooting up to 65 feet high, scientists at Kilauea volcano said Sunday.

27. Hell spawn? I thought that that volcano had lava orcas.
And that is why it's named Killer Whale.

5. I don't think the Hawaiian goddess Pele is into sacrificing virgins
She was more into grown men. Do we have any men who are willing to sacrifice themselves? :)

12. Are you kidding? Everything in Hawaii is called Waimea, and attached
to each tourist spot you'll find stories of female sacrifices. I left with the impression that everything was called Waimea to commemorate their last words: "Why-a-me? AAAhhhhh!"

6. One of the world's most active volcanoes being active is normal.
Not sure why we should be concerned about it. It's pretty cool that we live on an active planet.

8. A similar eruption occurred in 1997.
As for being concerned, they've closed the park around the volcano for the time being. So, no, it doesn't happen all the time, but it's also not all that unique. I suppose we'll learn more about this in the next few days. Reading several reports on this, there doesn't appear to be much concern about any kind of widespread danger. It's an active volcano.

So, I went and learned more about this eruption, so I'd have some facts. Volcanoes are a fascinating natural phenomenon.

24. Well, a few years ago the eruption destroyed the Visitor Center at the park...does that count?
When I saw the Heiau, in 1991, the wall was bent by lava, but it was still there.

Next eruption... the Heiau was gone.

Pele givith, and Pele taketh away.

32. Well, I've lived long enough to know that almost everything has its pros and its cons.
People WERE hurt in those eruptions.. mostly economically.

There were homes left isolated by all the destruction, yet they couldn't get insurance money unless they lived in them until they were destroyed. So, people lived there without utilities, having to walk because the roads were destroyed by lava, etc.

It was very hard on people, and some probably walked away and lost everything.

Yet, it was a spectacular sight.

Somehow, we need to have a balance, and help people who are caught like that.
