It is the inexorable march toward fascism. Each day, the citizens are more complacent. Each day the citizens are calmly led to accept a little more of the collar on their neck. Each day the citizens are slightly more anesthetized.

This has been going on for decades. The difference today is the rate at which the change moves forward.

It is all close to done.

George, your only mistake was missing the date by 30 years.

12. Obama has done nothing to move money downhill.
Social reforms are cheap. Something to redistribute wealth, which is the antidote to our economic problems, was not accomplished. The net is to advantage the plutocrats. Even the stimulus package had tax cuts for the rich. Who can keep track? Union busting. And the beginnings of the deconstruction of SS. The reversal of FDR.

25. Exactly. If it was not Obama, it would be whoever else the system
allowed to be in his place.

We've had two presidents buck the system in the past 50 years - one was killed, and the other was demeaned, derided, and dismissed (to later become the best ex-president of the last hundred years).

47. And another book. Read "The Shock Doctrine...........
The Rise of Disaster Capitalism" by Naomi Klein and tell me it's not happening here. If you'll notice, ALL of the regimes that were discribed were fascist or at least totalitarian. It IS happening here.

And as another poster pointed out, we get a few "social" reforms to keep the left-libertarians thinking that things are getting better (BTW, I AM a left libertarian), when the crux of ANY real reform is the redistribution of wealth DOWNWARD. Until that happens NOTHING will really get better. All the other stuff, no matter HOW morally right, is just window dressing. We'd also get the social reforms with the economic ones, but make no mistake, the economic ones are the MOST important.

Obama is helping to destroy the safety net --

Don't expect to be universally lauded here for saying so, you will receive some derisive commentary as well as I'm sure you know. Oddly (or perhaps not so odd after all), it seems that Libertarian types recognize this fact far easier than Democrats do. Most Libertarians hold views on other matters that make me very uncomfortable to ever find myself in agreement with them on any topic, but there it is.

17. I agree with most of what you say, but back during the Bush
years, oddly enough, Democrats/Progressives were very concerned about the creeping totalitarianism and actually fought against it. The Full Body Scanners, eg. While Bush was president, nearly every single Democrat on all the boards I posted on, agreed, those machines were a violation of Constitutional rights and Civil Liberties groups fought for six years, successfully, to keep them out of our lives.

Now, oddly enough, I see comments on Democratic boards that would have been shocking during the Bush years. Comments that sound like the ones made by Bush supporters during the bush years, dismissing the concerns about these Orwellian practices of treating every American as if they were a criminal and violating their fourth amendment rights.

So, what I have concluded from this is that for some, it never was about rights or principles, it was about party loyalty.

So, by playing of this, the PTBs can be assured of support for each step towards totalitarianism from at least half the population, meaning they will never have to face a unified front against them. Not until it's too late, anyhow. That is how it always happened, historically. I guess it was naive of me to think that we had learned from the past.

53. Because
our half-dozen illegal wars

Because at most people are vaguely tired of our being in Afghanistan after this long, and Iraq isn't producing casualties anymore so nobody cares. (This is opposed to fascism, in which the people are constantly and loudly reminded of military campaigns.)

the dismantling of SS

If that starts, I guarantee there will be protests. Including by the same teabaggers that are unknowingly asking for it right now.

the governmental mandate to purchase a specific product from for-profit corporations.

Because, as hard as this is to believe, outside of DU very few people are actively offended by the existence of for-profit entities or the fact that they and the government can partner to achieve certain ends.

(And, incidentally, that's false; quite a few insurance policies are offered by not-for-profit corporations -- mine is, for instance.)

16. a particular quote comes to mind
"The illusion of freedom will continue as long as it's profitable to continue the illusion. At the point where the illusion becomes too expensive to maintain, they will just take down the scenery, they will pull back the curtains, they will move the tables and chairs out of the way and you will see the brick wall at the back of the theater."
— Frank Zappa

it is, of course, amazing - what the "illusion of freedom" seems to be to so many americans. ah well. it has been a good run, all in all.

44. I usually avoid engaging you for my own reasons, but please give a go at refuting what follows:
I will not be replying back to you, so you're free to just go for it.

Here is that famous list of 14 points of fascism. Please enlighten us all with how the ones upon which I comment are not here and now.

1. Powerful and continuing expressions of nationalism. From the prominent displays of flags and bunting to the ubiquitous lapel pins, the fervor to show patriotic nationalism, both on the part of the regime itself and of citizens caught up in its frenzy, was always obvious. Catchy slogans, pride in the military, and demands for unity were common themes in expressing this nationalism. It was usually coupled with a suspicion of things foreign that often bordered on xenophobia.

- - - As but one example, there are flags on everything from porta potties to baby clothes.

2. Disdain for the importance of human rights. The regimes themselves viewed human rights as of little value and a hindrance to realizing the objectives of the ruling elite. Through clever use of propaganda, the population was brought to accept these human rights abuses by marginalizing, even demonizing, those being targeted. When abuse was egregious, the tactic was to use secrecy, denial, and disinformation.

- - - We're not as bad as some on this account. Unless we're talking about Muslims. Or Hispanics. Or gays. Or the poor. But I'm willing to concede we're not there yet on this point.

3. Identification of enemies/scapegoats as a unifying cause. The most significant common thread among these regimes was the use of scapegoating as a means to divert the people’s attention from other problems, to shift blame for failures, and to channel frustration in controlled directions. The methods of choice—relentless propaganda and disinformation—were usually effective. Often the regimes would incite “spontaneous” acts against the target scapegoats, usually communists, socialists, liberals, Jews, ethnic and racial minorities, traditional national enemies, members of other religions, secularists, homosexuals, and “terrorists.” Active opponents of these regimes were inevitably labeled as terrorists and dealt with accordingly.

- - - No one can deny this is true.

4. The supremacy of the military/avid militarism. Ruling elites always identified closely with the military and the industrial infrastructure that supported it. A disproportionate share of national resources was allocated to the military, even when domestic needs were acute. The military was seen as an expression of nationalism, and was used whenever possible to assert national goals, intimidate other nations, and increase the power and prestige of the ruling elite.

- - - We've seen a modest paradigm shift on this point. It isn't so much the rise of military power, per se. Rather, it is the use of militarism to accrue benefit to the MIC.

5. Rampant sexism. Beyond the simple fact that the political elite and the national culture were male-dominated, these regimes inevitably viewed women as second-class citizens. They were adamantly anti-abortion and also homophobic. These attitudes were usually codified in Draconian laws that enjoyed strong support by the orthodox religion of the country, thus lending the regime cover for its abuses.

- - - This point is not unlike the human rights thing, above. I'll allow you a pass on this one, too. Many actual women won't. Its a close call.

6. A controlled mass media. Under some of the regimes, the mass media were under strict direct control and could be relied upon never to stray from the party line. Other regimes exercised more subtle power to ensure media orthodoxy. Methods included the control of licensing and access to resources, economic pressure, appeals to patriotism, and implied threats. The leaders of the mass media were often politically compatible with the power elite. The result was usually success in keeping the general public unaware of the regimes’ excesses.

- - - Ha.

7. Obsession with national security. Inevitably, a national security apparatus was under direct control of the ruling elite. It was usually an instrument of oppression, operating in secret and beyond any constraints. Its actions were justified under the rubric of protecting “national security,” and questioning its activities was portrayed as unpatriotic or even treasonous.

- - - Ha Ha.

8. Religion and ruling elite tied together. Unlike communist regimes, the fascist and protofascist regimes were never proclaimed as godless by their opponents. In fact, most of the regimes attached themselves to the predominant religion of the country and chose to portray themselves as militant defenders of that religion. The fact that the ruling elite’s behavior was incompatible with the precepts of the religion was generally swept under the rug. Propaganda kept up the illusion that the ruling elites were defenders of the faith and opponents of the “godless.” A perception was manufactured that opposing the power elite was tantamount to an attack on religion.

- - - Not as obvious these days, but the connection of religion to government is still very strong.

9. Power of corporations protected. Although the personal life of ordinary citizens was under strict control, the ability of large corporations to operate in relative freedom was not compromised. The ruling elite saw the corporate structure as a way to not only ensure military production (in developed states), but also as an additional means of social control. Members of the economic elite were often pampered by the political elite to ensure a continued mutuality of interests, especially in the repression of “have-not” citizens.

- - - Ha Ha Ha.

10. Power of labor suppressed or eliminated. Since organized labor was seen as the one power center that could challenge the political hegemony of the ruling elite and its corporate allies, it was inevitably crushed or made powerless. The poor formed an underclass, viewed with suspicion or outright contempt. Under some regimes, being poor was considered akin to a vice.

- - - The funeral for unions was quite some time ago. The corpse was Patco.

11. Disdain and suppression of intellectuals and the arts. Intellectuals and the inherent freedom of ideas and expression associated with them were anathema to these regimes. Intellectual and academic freedom were considered subversive to national security and the patriotic ideal. Universities were tightly controlled; politically unreliable faculty harassed or eliminated. Unorthodox ideas or expressions of dissent were strongly attacked, silenced, or crushed. To these regimes, art and literature should serve the national interest or they had no right to exist.

- - - This is a Hallmark of the right wing and many in the "middle". Willful ignorance is a fashion statement.

12. Obsession with crime and punishment. Most of these regimes maintained Draconian systems of criminal justice with huge prison populations. The police were often glorified and had almost unchecked power, leading to rampant abuse. “Normal” and political crime were often merged into trumped-up criminal charges and sometimes used against political opponents of the regime. Fear, and hatred, of criminals or “traitors” was often promoted among the population as an excuse for more police power.

- - - Two words: Death. Penalty. More: What was Officer Hank cheerfully twirling a baton and flipping nickles to the kids who waited for the "walk" light has morphed into men in black combat clothes and black leather gloves walking two by two with close cropped heads, looking tough on the mean streets of our cities while their federal brethren, dressed similarly, are tossing old ladies and kids for concealed bombs.

13. Rampant cronyism and corruption. Those in business circles and close to the power elite often used their position to enrich themselves. This corruption worked both ways; the power elite would receive financial gifts and property from the economic elite, who in turn would gain the benefit of government favoritism. Members of the power elite were in a position to obtain vast wealth from other sources as well: for example, by stealing national resources. With the national security apparatus under control and the media muzzled, this corruption was largely unconstrained and not well understood by the general population.

- - - Two words: Goldman. Sachs. And not just under Bush/Obama. This goes back decades.

14. Fraudulent elections. Elections in the form of plebiscites or public opinion polls were usually bogus. When actual elections with candidates were held, they would usually be perverted by the power elite to get the desired result. Common methods included maintaining control of the election machinery, intimidating and disenfranchising opposition voters, destroying or disallowing legal votes, and, as a last resort, turning to a judiciary beholden to the power elite.

- - - Two words: Florida. Ohio. The fact is, we don't even know what we don't know about stolen elections. So long as "they" count the votes, we can't have confidence in elections. But all of that is beside the point, really. The REAL fact is, we have no good choices in many of our supposedly fair elections. As but one example, Heath Schuler vs a repubican. What kind of choice is that?

Please, do try to show how we are not pretty much there on at least 10 of these 14 points.

My best wishes to you and yours in this holiday season.

38. Our School District Is Applying For An IBM Grant
For something like $15 million - http://www.ibm.com/ibm/ibmgives/grant/education/programs/reinventing/re_school_reform.shtml

Consider this:

States are going broke from reduced tax collections, and now have the federal mandate for standardized tests on top of it.

So where can the money come from? The corps, who have their own agenda and controls on the purse strings. We now receive in our district Race to the Top funds. That's money that comes, in part, from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and if you think they're saints, look at what they're doing to corporatize agriculture in Africa and dump Monsanto's GM crap over there.

For the last 10 years, we've been asking ourselves "why do they need so much money?" We know the answer, now more than ever: to buy our government out from under us. All of us, not just the US.
