Edited on Tue Mar-15-11 12:48 AM by SaveAmerica
I first learned of these during the aftermath of Katrina, they were stationed in the Gulf of Mexico and I read that they have enough room to house thousands and are stocked with fresh water, food, medical and other items to assist in a disaster. They have smaller vessels that can travel over water and go ashore with supplies and rescue people to bring back to the ship.

I don't have cable or sat. so don't know if it's been spoken about.

I don't know what this ship is called so I can do a search for it to see if it's been deployed to Japan.

Thanks in advance.

1. Well, if one is to rely on the reports in the media...
it appears that the only one of our ships heading toward Japan is the U.S.S. Ronald Reagan.

Ronnie saves the day again!

2. Here are Facebook and Flicker sites for our Navy ships in the area:

Your idea of bringing ships for people to stay on is a great idea. They should send cruise ships there, too. I don't know about the particular ships you have in mind, but here are links to the USS Reagan and Pacific Fleet sites:

USS Ronald Reagan Facebook page (with photos): http://www.facebook.com/ussronaldreagan

Pacific Fleet photo feed: http://www.flickr.com/photos/compacflt/5523205558/in/set-72157623692498672/

both are already over there helping with relief efforts in Japan. Here's one of our military personnel from San Diego helping out:

3. Thanks, I'll check those out, my simple search on google brought up the Comfort Hospital Ship
It helped out after Haiti, this is similar but I don't believe it is the one I remember from Katrina. I believe the ship I remember hung out as part of the Atlantic fleet and there is one that is part of the Pacific fleet. Surely if I've thought of it, someone else has them activated and on the way.

The US is sending another 4,000 Navy sailors and Marines to Haiti for the earthquake relief effort, diverting them from deployments in the Gulf and Africa. The Pentagon reported on Wednesday that the Navy hospital ship Comfort, had received its first Haitian patients. WAMU reporter Sabri Ben-Achour is onboard the USNS Comfort and sent this report.

WASHINGTON — Eight US naval ships, including the aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan, were Monday assisting with rescue and recovery operations in quake-hit Japan with five others on the way, the Pentagon said.
"We currently have eight ships stationed east of Honshu -- five more on the way," said Defense Department spokesman Colonel David Lapan.
Many more details at link, including specifics on helicopters, planes and humanitarian aid being brought by ships.

7. Your article gave me possible information about a friend we've lost track of -stationed in Okinawa
Most likely on the way to Honshu.

Marines stationed on the Japanese island of Okinawa have been redeployed northeast to Honshu, the area worst hit Friday by an 8.9 magnitude earthquake and a massive tsunami and other assets were headed to the island of Hokkaido where they will help transport Japanese soldiers.

9. And thank you again, the Essex is the Amphibious Ship I was looking for
According to this its home port is Sasebo, Japan. I have to hope that they're on top of things but I imagine that what I hope these vessels could do in regards to evacuation of the Japanese who are most in danger would be like using a thimble to empty a bathtub.

11. Glad that article helped you find the ship you were seeking
Each one is small in this enormous scale, but many countries have offered a variety of assistance:

5. Pic of hover vehicle that brought water/supplies to Mississippi

On land, delivering water. These hover vehicles are housed on the larger rescue ship.

Possibly the USS Bataan? Now my question to naval folks, do all naval ships have the vessels that skim over water and on land? I'm thinking bringing people onto the ship instead of delivery of supplies to the country.

8. Confirming it was the USS Bataan that was in the Gulf after Katrina, scroll to end of this page
This ship stands out in my memory because I read reports that it was out in the Gulf immediately after Hurricane Katrina went through the area. As people were dying of thirst and hunger in the Dome, I wanted to scream about the ability of that craft to deliver water and food up the Mississippi to New Orleans but I never heard of any such relief. Then I saw footage on TV of the hovercrafts delivering water to a beach in Mississippi. This page talks about what I feared, I don't know if it is confirmed but if they had supplies get 'almost' to New Orleans then turn around while elderly ladies died undignified deaths, that's criminal.

But that was Katrina. This vessel is the one I am wondering if will be called to help with Japan. Thanks everyone for your help and links.
