Emergency Manager law quickly impacting unions in Michigan
Teachers union considers authorizing strike

In Flint, which received state approval for an $8 million emergency bond needed to make payroll this month and is seen as a likely target for state intervention, the firefighters union has reportedly issued a list of new concessions including increased health insurance payments and giving up holiday pay and night-shift premiums.

“I would rather give concessions that I would like than have an or something of that magnitude come in and say this is what you are going to do,” Flint Firefighters Union President Raul Garcia told the Wall Street Journal.
"
The law also gives officials in financially troubled towns the ability to cancel contracts, but Flint Mayor Dayne Walling has said that double digit concessions by union workers could prevent that from happening.

In Pontiac, which along with Benton Harbor, Ecorse and the Detroit Public School system already has an emergency financial manager in place, local police voted to dissolve their union last week.

2. So instead of organizing and going on strike...
... the MI unions just lay down and die.

Sigh.

3. Cops and firemen go on strike because the town is broke and can't afford the union contract anymore?
Do you really believe they would have the public's support?

4. Strikes are always a last resort and often end up hurting unions
especially when strikes are forbidden by state law.

This isn't as simple as it seems.

5. This is something that many outsiders did not understand when they casually called for
a general strike here in Wisconsin. It's easy for those who are not is states like Wisconsin or Michigan to advise us what we should do. This decision is up to those in Michigan and yes, it is not as simple as it seems.
