Dear Steven,
Thank you for your lobby day bus donation. Thanks to your generosity more than one hundred farm workers had the opportunity to go to Sacramento last Tuesday to lobby for "The Fair Treatment for Farm Workers Act" (SB 104- Steinberg). These farm workers met with dozens of legislatures in both the both senate and house. They shared their stories of abuse at their workplace and how the sentencing of the people responsible for 17 year old Maria Isavel's death reinforced their belief that farm workers need a tool to enforce the laws designed to protect themselves it's obvious the state of California cannot. They were able to let their legislatures know how SB104 would change their lives.
Farm worker Lourdes Sanchez asked us to share her thoughts with you. "I have been working 15 years in the fields and it's very difficult to work under deplorable conditions... On March 15, I was involved with the United farm workers and students to fight for fair treatment for farm workers. We don't want more farm workers end up like Maria Isavel because she died of lack of training and safety conditions. Unfortunately there was no justice....I am pleased and proud that we succeeded in our group visiting California's senators. Our voices were heard on all the injustices we have experienced. We achieved to get the support of Senate Democrats. I am sincerely grateful for all the donations made to the union because without your contribution, our visit would not have been possible."
35 year veteran farm worker Carolina Rosas added, "I had a very positive experience visiting the legislators and I saw we had a lot of support for our causes. They were very welcoming and I am hopeful they heard our pleas and will pass our laws. I am thankful to those who gave so generously and made this trip possible for me and my fellow farm workers."
I want to join Lordes, Carolina and the more than 100 farm workers who were able to attend this lobby day due to your generosity in expressing our sincere thanks for your support.
Sincerely,
Arturo S Rodriguez
President
