Depressed dads quicker to spank their young kids
Commentary: Yes, even dads need help form time to time.

NEW YORK — New dads who feel down are much more likely to spank their young children than dads in good spirits, U.S. researchers said Monday.

They found 40 percent of depressed men said they had spanked their kids in the last month, compared to only 13 percent of men without symptoms.

“This finding is particularly concerning given that children were only 1 year of age in our study,” Dr. R. Neal Davis, a pediatrician at Intermountain Healthcare in Murray, Utah, and colleagues write in the journal Pediatrics.

At that age, they add, spanking is more likely to cause injuries, and children probably won’t understand why they are being hurt.

1. I had no idea so many people spanked their children still
I think that parenting is just so hard and for many people it is way too much. And our cultures, instead of supporting parents just throws curve balls at them with constant advertising for things and more things....

8. Turn off the TV
Don't pay attention to the advertising.

I know there's a ton of cultural and economic problems and that really we need to tear the whole mess down and start over. And one way to do that - don't buy into the current system. Turn it off. Don't let the propaganda into your mindspace. Humans do have some free will.

4. Well, that explains it. I KNEW b/c I didn't brush my teeth at age 2 didn't warrant a spanking.

9. Mothers have been studied extensively
This is the first time that I can recall dads being studied. That's why I found it so interesting.

10. Moms are studied on a regular basis.
We tend to be the blame for everything, especially us single moms.

12. Child abuse goes up when the economy goes down.
Stressed out, depressed parents who can't make ends meet are more likely to take it out on the kids.
