3. What Michael Vick advocates is irrelevant. He's an over-paid
jock, a convicted felon, and someone willing to endorse the torture of innocents for fun and profit. He has no voice from where I sit.

4. When has he recently endorsed dog fighting?
I mean I thought the whole purpose of our penal system was to rehabilitate those who commit crimes. He's served his time, he's done his parole and community services and paid his fines. And now he travels each week to a different school to talk to kids about the horrors of dog-fighting, reaching out to children who live in areas where dog fighting is actually acceptable.

9. I don't think I said he endorsed dogfighting.

I don't have any problem with Vick serving his time and returning to his life, other than I don't think he should be publicly or privately honored, exonerated, or held up in any way, and I think the time he served was too short.

I think that individuals who engage in the torture of living things for fun and profit are sociopaths who don't make good public examples of anything, and who don't deserve any public acclaim. I think that a president wanting to make a point about rehabilitation could have picked a more worthy, less offensive example.

If Michael Vick were a teacher, would he be given his license back and allowed back in the classroom? No way in hell, and that's as it should be. A public sports figure who is also a convicted felon can visit school children, though. Of course, talented teachers aren't turning a profit for any franchise.

12. First, please get it straight - Obama did not call Jeff Lurie specifically about Vick
He called about the plans that Lurie has unveiled about the new greener Linc Field.

And you know there are alot of 'What-if' there. Sure it would have been great if Vick just disappeared and we never heard from him again but that didn't happen. Vick isn't a teacher or an office worker or a gas-station attendent - he is a football player. That is what he does and he obviously does it well. And there isn't much we can do to change that.

But Vick does do something along with playing football, he remembers where he came from and how he ended up there. Perhaps you and I don't understand how someone can use a dog for dog fighting but there is a large culture out there in the US that has no problem with this. I use to live in a neighborhood where pitbulls and other agressive dogs were owned everywhere. I once asked a kid who was walking his puppy pit if he had gotten it spayed yet and the kid just laughed - they don't do that to their dogs. Just watch Pit Boss on Animal Planet - they talk about that culture.

Vick has an amazing opportunity because he is someone from that kind of background. And because he hasn't just disappeared he has been a valuable spokesperson who reaches out to kids and talks about how wrong dog-fighting is. He has done this almost every week since getting his chance again in the NFL. He can't change what he has done in the past but perhaps he can prevent someone else from doing it in the future.

Michael Vick is here to stay in the NFL and no amount of bitching at DU will change that. Not only is he here to stay it seems he is also very popular to boot. Despite how he reads here at DU, he's very popular across the country and came pretty close to winning the NFL Pro Bowl fan favorite award. Michael Vick has their attention and the thing is this - that attention he can use for good, make a difference when it comes to the treatment of animals. Maybe some lives will be altared for the good because of it.

But as for Obama, DU has once again totally missed the reason for that phone call to Eagles owner Jeff Lurie. What Lurie is doing to Linc Field is something Obama hopes that all stadium/arena owners will embrace - using alternative energy to run their stadiums. Jeff Lurie is putting in place a massive Wind Farm/solar panal system for Linc Field that will save millions on electricity costs and have the capacity to run the stadium at full power with a much lower carbon imprint. Knowing how much carbon is wasted by these stadiums isn't that something we should talk about and celebrate? What if Lurie could get other team owners to do that for their stadiums. I think that is a worthy call from the president if you ask me!

14. You are correct, in part.
He did call about the plans for a "greener" stadium. I've commented on that.

We'll have to continue to disagree about the rest. I don't think a "do as I say, not as I did" role model is all that effective.

I also think those prone to torture aren't easily rehabilitated, or in some cases, able to be rehabilitated at all, under the surface of their public efforts. Torture is one characteristic of a sociopath, and sociopaths cannot be rehabilitated. Whether all torturers are sociopaths is another question, and one I don't have a definitive answer for, but I thinks it's a question on point.

I also think that the POTUS should choose better role models to throw public support to, period.

I doubt very much if GWB had called to make those comments about "2nd chances" in reference to Vick, there would be any on DU defending him. A "D" doesn't get anyone a pass from me.
