Meanwhile, have a nice glass of eggnog and hug your doggie (or your pet of choice).

(5,101 posts)and also many people from all around the world.
All Americans were nice and educated. The only "problem" I met once, was a hard time to convince a lady. She was nice and polite but a little bit stubborn and angry because she had to go to a Belgian notary for the house she bought. She found it was unfair because her mother was notary.
I took me hours to explain her that it was a mandatory, that her mother was not entitled and plus, the law forbids a notary to act when a relative is concerned.
Not really an "ugly nasty" American as you see
By the way, all those who jump into these stupid cliches should better take a look around them. As if, all Europeans were educated and nice ! We do have our fair bunch of dumbs here too. As it is everywhere.
Well, I fume about cliches but I'm going to use one too LOL : you will meet nice people and bad people everywhere, no matter what is their origin, culture, religion...

Merci pour le bon travail que vous faites.
syringis
(5,101 posts)C'est avec grand plaisir
Je me permets une petite correction :
Merci pour le bon travail que tu faites[/b / Merci pour le bon travail que tu fais
Ou bien :
Merci pour le bon travail que VOUS faites.
Irish_Dem
(46,918 posts)I thought tu is informal and singular?
Vous is formal or plural?
Speaking to you I should address you formally, not casually?
Merci!
syringis
(5,101 posts)I'm sorry, I should have explained a bit more. And plus, all the sentence went in bold...
"Tu" is singular and used to adress anybody in a casual way. Those you can adress in this form are family members, friends, kids, persons on social networks,...
"Vous" is a plural form but used also to adress formally somebody : someone not related to you, your boss, an old person, a pupil to a teacher, etc.
I agree, it is not always easy to know what is the right form. As French was not complicated enough...
I meant if you chose the "tu" form, you conjugate the verb at the 2nd singular person.
"faites" is correct if you chose the "vous" form, it is the 2nd plural person.
So please, use the "tu" form. The "vous" keeps a distance and is a little cold/ Not at all what I want
Irish_Dem
(46,918 posts)I got it now.
I thought you didn't like the pronoun "tu" , and you changed the verb to match the better pronoun, "vous". I thought as an American I had overstepped my bounds and I should speak to you with formal pronouns!
But it was the other way around. Yes right, I didn't conjugate the verb correctly for tu.
je fais
tu fais
il/elle fait
nous faisons
vous faites
So even if I am using "vous" as formal and singular, I would use plural verb?
syringis
(5,101 posts)Especially when learners are not from a Latin-derived language.
Yes, even when the "vous" is used as formal and singular, the verb is conjugated at the2nd person plural.
Irish_Dem
(46,918 posts)I had forgotten that....but is tricky since you are using it as singular but use plural verb...
Also I originally had "vous" in that sentence to you, but then changed it as I thought perhaps I was being too informal, so I changed it to "tu".... but didn't think about the verb...
So when you offered a correction that is where my head went with it! I always agonize over the vous and tu as I don't want to put foot wrong. Thank you for giving me a list of when to use tu vs vous....
MERCI BEAUCOUP!!
syringis

(5,101 posts)We had a nice Christmas family time. We have chosen for many years, to make it simple, focusing on being together and spending a nice joyful time.
Well, I keep a special menu, I like Christmas decoration but I avoid as much as I can the frenzy consumerism which have not much to do with Christmas spirit.
Many are on the same track and Holiday time are more in the joy spirit as it was long ago.
A few years ago, it went so far that a law emerged to forbid Christmas ads before november 15...
I remember how weird it was to see Christmas ads in early september...

I often say being atheist but is to simplify. I still can't exactly define what I am. I don't adhere to a particular religion but I don't reject all in them.
It took me years and still I'm nowhere...
