Thrilled to put '17 behind us. One of the shittiest years I've lived through. Both personally and regarding what's going on in the world. Hoping and praying to enjoy a major, and I mean MAJOR, Democratic victory in 2018. Lets get to work guys!

(5,376 posts)Spouse transplanted me to Oregon from there many years ago, but a part of my heart still remains in my old home town. Once lived in an apartment in Ballard, where, if I stepped out on the balcony and turned my head just right, I had a great view of Mt. Rainier. Fun times back in the day! Water front. Ferry rides. Public Market. Swingin' downtown "dives". I do love Oregon, but the Seattle mem'ries remain.
Have a great 2018. Glad you're on DU. Oh, and sorry about the Seahawks. Darn!

(54,365 posts)My family and I have been here at a very special "meeting of the minds" thing we come to here every year.
It has been close to 24/7 constant mental challenges and learning, so I haven't been posting much since I got to the States.
We just rang in the New Year with a bunch of extraordinary people, and will spend breakfast saying good-bye, and walking along the coast afterward to decompress. On Jan. 2, we all scatter again to the four winds. But for now, I was happy to be all together in one place for a week solid. It doesn't happen very often any more, and once our first grandchild makes his or her appearance in a little less than six months, it will be even less often.
2017 was yin and yang for us. We saw my native USA deteriorate before my very eyes, although when we visited Cape Cod in July, it was like a time warp. Little had changed there other than the ocean being just a little warmer to swim in (and spotting of great white sharks at out favorite beach to swim at--a first in my experience since 1984). On the other had, at my wife's year-later check-up, her latest cancer, known as "the murderer," had shown no sign of returning since it made its unwelcome appearance in 2016. That made up for a lot of bad news back home, although if our national parks get decimated and 10 million people get their health insurance canceled, it won't exactly make us proud of what America has done to so many of its less fortunate citizens. What kind of country does that when it didn't even need to?
