It's not just Mitt Romney's tax returns that are under lock and key

It's not just Mitt Romney's tax returns that are under lock and key

by Jed Lewison

ABC News reports that Mitt Romney's Olympic archival records remain sealed—or, more precisely, those records that haven't already been destroyed remain sealed:

More than a decade has passed since Mitt Romney presided over the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, but the archival records from those games that were donated to the University of Utah to provide an unprecedented level of transparency about the historic event, remain off limits to the public. And some of the documents that may have shed the most light on Romney's stewardship of the Games were likely destroyed by Salt Lake Olympic officials, ABC News has learned.

Romney had promised to be transparent:

In a February 3, 2000 speech at the National Press Club he said: "All of the documents inside our organization are available to the public. Simply submit a form saying which documents you want, for instance -- I want to see all the letters written by Mr. Romney to Mr. Samaranch. You'll get 'em all."

But despite his pledge, he didn't deliver:

The archivists involved in preparing the documents for public review told ABC News that financial documents, contracts, appointment calendars, emails and correspondence are likely not included in the 1,100 boxes of Olympic records, and will not be part of the collection that will ultimately be made public.

Apparently, Romney's operation never sent archivists any of that information. And now, they say, it has almost certainly been destroyed.

It's common knowledge here on DU, but I don't see this information being used by the Obama campaign so far (unless I've missed something). In combination with the tax return stonewalling, the Bain fudging, and now this revelation about the Olympics records, it should help confirm the perception that there's something shady about Mitt.

or let them call my references. I really think that this will be a great tactic to get a new job, don't you?

The more Romney hides, the more frightening he becomes as a candidate. So we are to be judging him by his Bain experience, but we can't know the details of WHEN he was actually there, or what he did? Or how many Americans were put out of work as he and his friends borrowed hundreds of millions from the companies, then sold them for scrap? And we're supposed to be impressed by his honesty, but he reveals nothing?

The GOp has managed to choose the absolutely most unelectable POS in history, all because the rest of the field was an even more unsuitable choice. THIS THIS is what happens when MONEY chooses your candidates for you. There were probably some decent republicans out there at the beginning of the primary, but the BIG MONEY who want something for their support, prevailed and you ended up with people like Santorum, and Gingrich, and of course Romney. This is what happens when the voters don't really get to choose. you get absolute garbage for a candidate.

So far, the only defense I see online from the usual angry-old-white-men, is that Romney doesn't have to release them because Obama hasn't released his 1) college transcripts or 2) his real birth certificate (both false arguments.) And.. that the "libruls" are trying to ruin Romney because they are afraid that voters will see what an amazing American Business man he is, and how he's done all these amazing things for American workers and companies, and created all these jobs. Okay, did see some tea party woman on a friend's FB page who referred to Obama as the REAL outsourcer. So basically, they got nothing. Their candidate sucks.

For instance, Michael Savage made an issue of the sealed transcripts. In this clip, a liberal caller argued that his job didn't demand the transcripts.
