(268,910 posts)We have a cold front moving in tomorrow - I'd be shocked if it goes below 70 - that's cold enough for me.

(205,161 posts)It's supposed to go up a few degrees as the day wears on. On Thursday it set a record low at -20, there were records set all over the area. I tried taking my dog out within the hour and he refused to go and I can't say I blame him! Stay warm!

(205,161 posts)I'm in the East and that's in the West, but my Dad was born in Postdam and my grandmother told me the story. He was born on January 22nd in a house that was being used as a small hospital. She said that the doctor and my grandfather took turns driving their car around the block so it wouldn't freeze up! And I just looked and it's only -11 there now - but it "feels like" -22!

(11,092 posts)Kept losing power last night, all pipes frozen. So many things broke down over the last few days, mostly because of cold and ice. I'm 72, live alone and had to figure out how to fix most of it. Sounds like today's subject will be Frozen Pipes, 101.
Never give up.

(64,990 posts)Minus 9 here (Chicago area) at 5am.
As to your pipes, maybe you did this already but open everything you can.
Any chance to let liquid out reduces the chance of damage due to thermal expansion. (Inverse in this case)

(64,990 posts)Our finished basement has a small bathroom. I live on a corner, so my garage is in the basement and we pull in on a curved driveway from the sidestreet.
That wall is actually at ground level, even though it's technically the basement. The water pipes for the sink, and then in the next room, washer, are boxed in between wallboard and the concrete wall. The hot water pipes stayed warm by conduction and were fine, the tolier tank was fine because that pipe runs just outside that boxed in area, but the cold water froze. I had to use a hair dryer on the pipe and blowing down into the hole for the pipe. Then put a spec heater near the vanity and let it sit for about an hour.
Seems ok now, but letting that faucet trickle just bare so water stays moving.
A little warmer today, so might not be an issue, but better safe than sorry.

I moved to FL for multiple reasons but one was to not freeze and shiver!

(4,429 posts)I moved back to the North East and as cold as it is - and as hard as it has been shoveling......I'm so glad.
Everyday I look out at the mountains and think I am so lucky. I told my daughter (born and raised in Tally) that I'd never go to FL again. Not even for a vacation.
(though we have lots of friends still down there who like it
