(IANS) / 22 July 2012
Men may now need to think twice before questioning a womans intelligence at home or in the office. Psychologists have found female IQ scores have risen above mens for the first time in 100 years.
Women have been as much as five points behind men since testing commenced a century ago but that gap has narrowed in the recent times. This year women finally came out on top. It may be because they are better at multi-tasking. The breakthrough has been uncovered by James Flynn, the world-renowned authority on IQ tests.

That aside I'd always regarded both sexes as having equal IQs - sure was with the girls in my class at school.

I knew my wife of 40 years was a hell of a lot smarter than me since the day I met her.
That is why I married and stayed married to her.

(34,179 posts)It has been shown in study after study that standard IQ scores are, except for broad generalization, meaningless.
It has also been shown that the concept of "multi-tasking" is also BS.

(10,751 posts)...which is what they did after the first round of IQ testing showed women getting higher scores than men. (reference: Stephen Jay Gould, The Mismeasure of Man)
But really, while testing has its place, I question the utility of one test that supposedly measures all-around intelligence at all. There are so many great and useful characteristics of human beings that cannot be measured in this way -- including creativity, artistic and musical talent, manual dexterity, and many others -- how useful is it, really, to reduce our so-called "intelligence" down to one single number, and thus go forward trying to label one person as brilliant and another as dull?
I think the reductionist approach to human beings is fatally flawed and does not help us to achieve good outcomes. If someone is brilliant, good: let them prove it by passing whatever tests come their way in the course of their studies, and by doing great things. Otherwise, please let's don't call them brilliant just because they know how to take an IQ test, and have the social and cultural advantages that give them an advantage when doing so.
I recognize it does measure a certain sharpness of wit and ability; my objection is to the reductionist thinking behind it. Anyway, IQ tests were originally devised to identify the slower students and get them the appropriate help. Ironic, eh?
