Snowing heavily in central Maine - BIG flakes - can hardly see across the street.
Wind is picking up - but Central Maine Power is reporting few outages.
Maybe 5 inches of new snow and piling up fast.
So far - so good.

(2,340 posts)There's a steady snowfall, small flakes that are blowing.
If you look outside, it's like looking through voile curtains.
I'd say, looking at the buildup on the top of the air conditioner unit on the south side of the house, that we have about four inches so far.

(41,757 posts)The Atlanta Journal Constitution had WW3 mega font for the headline.
"5 BELOW!"
Our outdoor water spigot froze and we lost our water for a week.
It sucked.
That said - it won't make it above 0 here in Maine on Saturday.
Too cold and windy for ice fishing or skiing - going smelting Saturday (ice shack and wood stove).

(21,846 posts)It started snowing in the night but so far only 1-2 inches at most in the Bronx. The real problem is the wind and cold. Snowfall of up to 10 inches in Queens (on Long Island) but other parts of the city, considerably less.
I'm glad my office is closed for the day and that I can look outside while staying warm and dry.
Sanity Claws
(21,846 posts)That was accurate when I posted the message. However, the snow is now considerably heavier and piling up.

Traffic very slow but moving.
Most stores closed.
Walking back home the wind driven snow was brutal!

(6,399 posts)Moving it all around a lot. Accumulating decently but the big pickup of snow is coming after 1pm for the next couple of hours.
The town does good with plowing and we've had a few runs up and down the street even here at the edge of town so far.

(3,608 posts)will end in a couple of hours and I'm afraid you'll be bearing the brunt. NOT looking forward to shoveling especially with all the blowing and then it's going to turn to ice. There is a price to be paid for these snow days.

The 27 YO truck starts up just fine by makes a lot of strange noises at these temps.
If we have power - we will be OK

Not too bad here in S. VT. It's saturday's temps that I'm watching out for! -20 (not windchill, the actual temp) is forecasted.

(65,173 posts)Places in NJ and Bucks County got more than I did.
Next time a wingnut mentions how cold it is, remember to say that it's about climate, not the current weather. While many in the US have had cold weather, warmth has generally ruled in the rest of the world.

(1,642 posts)The cold Arctic air is blowing down into the US. That cold needs to stay up there. Without it, the Arctic continues to melt, and the reduction in Arctic white ice increases overall climate change.
(That's pretty visible in the picture above this post.)
But, that's probably too much for climate deniers to grasp.

(63,221 posts)It's terrible out there and I can barely see a thing outside my window. The mayor was just on television telling people to stay off the streets. It's very dangerous out there. I hope her travel will be easier next week!

(20,666 posts)Actually, for me, it looks like the winds won't get too high, so as long as I don't lose power, I can't complain. I'll be out there later. Looks like 4-6 inches for me, but others will have it worse....

(31,464 posts)But that's a good thing. Eastern Connecticut -- a fair amount of snow, drifting heavily because of the wind. It's actually relatively "warm" at 26 degrees, the highest temps we've seen in a week. But it's going to drop to -12 tonight, or so they say. But no trees down, no power outages. And I don't have to shovel any of it, so it's quite cozy sitting by the fire watching the snow swirl outside, playing with the iPad Pro Santa brought me, and listening to the Spotify playlists on the account my son set up for me for Christmas.
So...not that bad.

(11,092 posts)Few inches of snow, windy, several snow funnels. National Weather Serice issued a Hazardous Weather Conditions for this area, particularly for wind and wind chill temperatures, through Saturday.
Several folks still dealing with the aftermath of frozen (and burst) pipes during dangerous cold a few days ago.
I've made a pot of cauliflower/Vermont cheddar soup I can heat on the porch wood stove if I lose power. Still have roofs to finish raking.
Pipes are thawed, my car started first try, and my neighbor's Maremma Sheepdog came over to check on me. He supervised the pipe thawing a couple days ago and always stands beside me when I'm shoveling or roof raking. Have a little treat section in the pantry....just for him.

(11,092 posts)Preparing for possible power outages, I noticed the batteries were dead in my lantern. Tried as hard as I could but was unable to unscrew the lantern's base where the batteries go. I left
in the storm to go to a hardware store in a neighboring village. Once there, a young man said he'd be happy to help out. He managed to get the base off my lantern, installed 4 new batteries, then asked if I minded if he glued the plastic lantern button because it was cracked.
I'm going to call the store manager later. People helping people. What a wonderful way to run a business.
There are some really good people out there.

(297,137 posts)ago.. I would be reading that screen of NY schools closing.
I lived in Little Falls, NY by Utica.

(205,179 posts)I am very familiar with Little Falls! My mother grew up there and we used to visit my grandmother there! My grandparents ran Staszko's Market on East Main Street, I think! And I'm a graduate of Hamilton College, also near Utica.
Cha
(297,137 posts)I lived there for 12 years and worked at the Community Co-op. So many amazing people there.. Lots of friends I still communicate with.
My sister was the guidance councilor at the Elementary School where I lived close to.
I don't remember seeing your grandparents' market.. but, that's really cool!
We went to Hamilton to see Al Gore one time and the Dali Lama.. I think that's where we went.
I remember how cold it was, too.. brrrr!
Rhiannon12866
(205,179 posts)We used to visit my grandmother - who still ran the store and had a beautiful garden out back. You could walk everywhere and my grandmother knew everybody, there was a wonderful Polish bakery nearby and a newsstand where my Dad would take us to get comic books - he'd get a copy of MAD, LOL.
But you wouldn't remember the market because they built part of the highway through her property and she was forced to sell. I think that was back in the '70s.
And Hamilton is a terrific school - and we did have some impressive guest speakers. The one I remember best was B.F. Skinner. I was a psych major so we got to meet him! He was also a graduate so he made what I think was his last speech there.
Cha
(297,137 posts)from back there. I have such fond memories.. in fact I still dream a lot that I moved back there and the dreams are so real that I hear myself saying in the dreams.. "I really did this!".. well, no. lol
How exciting for you that you got to meet Brilliant psychologist, BF Skinner, at your College.. and his, too.
He had a long and interesting life!

(205,179 posts)I know that there was just a little scrap of land left and my mother let it go for taxes. It was only a few dollars a year, but it was of no use to anyone because it was just a triangle next to a highway. She was pretty upset.
My grandmother lived above the store and it was very cool for little kids. If we wanted a soda we could just go downstairs and pick one out of this big cooler!
There was a Q&A with B.F. Skinner - but I was unfortunately too overwhelmed to speak up. He spoke before the whole school, but the psych majors got to meet with him up close and personal in the afternoon and I was pretty much in awe of him. And he was not what you'd expect, quite self deprecating with a great sense of humor. And we heard stories, apparently in his undergraduate days "Fred" Skinner was quite a cut up!
2 or 3 inches of snow. Hard to tell because it's very windy. 4 degrees - WC -14.
