The Republicans shot the entire country in the foot.
They wanted a global empire. But you can't have one with an incurious, disengaged chief executive (I'm looking at you, Reagan, Bush Jr. and Trump...)
They wanted a huge, globe-spanning military. But they wanted a teeny-tiny government, just small enough to drown in a bathtub. But you can't have that without risking an attempt to render the military independent of, and superior to, the civil power.
We have lost global relevance. And we're headed for banana republic status.
