NYPD: New York City's 2017 crime rate was lowest since 1951

http://abc7ny.com/nypd-new-york-citys-2017-crime-rate-was-lowest-since-1951/2868270/

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) -- New York City ended 2017 with the lowest levels of crime since 1951, "when the Dodgers played in Brooklyn," Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Friday.

Officials say there were 290 murders in New York City in 2017, 45 fewer than the year prior and a far cry from the 2,245 murders the city endured in 1990. The drop in murders results in the lowest per-capita murder rate in nearly 70 years.

Several other so-called index crimes -- shootings, robberies, burglaries and grand larcenies auto -- also dropped.

"Crime in New York City has reached a new low," Police Commissioner James P. O'Neill said. "The murder rate hasn't been lower since the Korean War. As we celebrate this New York miracle, we continue deepening relationships with the public, emphasizing the shared responsibility we have to our safety. I am confident we can do more. And we will."

NYPD has eliminated Stop and Frisk, focused on community policing.
When DiBlasio was elected, the right wingers we predicting a descent into anarchy that would make the 70s and 80s.
I grew up in Brooklyn and worked in the city in the 70s, 80s and early 90s. The crime rate was very high and there were lots of places I never went, like Bryant Park, now home of fashion week, and Madison Square Park, now home to shake shack.
As a very petite young woman, I always carried mug money, so I wouldn't get stabbed or shot if I was mugged..
Thankfully it never happened.
But I'm glad my city is the safest large city in America. I'm sure our gun laws and face to face contact help too.

during the 90's. Live in Queens now. It's like a completely different place. I was temping and had to work in Times Square...between that, 42nd street and the Port Authority it was like the Bermuda Triangle of depravity.
