They have decided to protect Trump. They must believe doing this is their best bet for them to hold their seats this election. They have become corrupt in their quest to hold power. It's scary.
Their decision to protect Trump, including attacking the investigation could result in some republicans getting caught up in obstruction of justice charges. Nunes is playing with fire.
It is very difficult to understand what they are thinking because many of them talk and act crazy. Many of them are hypocrites. They say one thing and the next day they do the opposite.
They are terrified of their lunatic base which is another reason they act so crazy. Relying strictly on your base to win elections will not work long term.
Their decision to protect Trump could lead to Mueller being fired. That would set off a fire storm against Trump and the republicans in congress. It would create a bigger wave in this years election.
I believe the republicans have made the mistake of trying to hold power at all costs. This always leads to corruption and self destruction.
They will destroy themselves eventually or they will destroy our democracy.

(5,810 posts)They are kissing tRump’s ass and heaping praise on their dear leader. It is beyond sickening. I am having trouble believing I am seeing what I AM seeing and hearing.
I wish more and more I had the means to blow this popsicle stand. I think we do, but convincing my husband to sell everything and bug out to another place is getting more and more appealing by the day. I am almost convinced that NOTHING will be done about tRump and the others who are with him. A tiny spark remains within that maybe they will. But after seeing the display at this news conference, I am more concerned than ever that NOTHING will be done and it will continue on the current path. It is a path to destruction of this country and our way of governance. So I really want out. And that makes me profoundly sad and disappointed in the Congress who are our primary way to defend us against tRump. I believe that is because they are complicit in his coup and are up to their necks in the Whole scheme. Therefore, they are never going to do anything to get to the truth. And will do everything they can to protect tRump AND themselves.

What would be the fire storm that would be set off?
Sure - the MSM will equate this to the Saturday Night Massacre. It will be big news for a few news cycles. The Dems will throw a hissy fit - but bottom line they are impotent to do anything.
Trump and the Repugs will weather this storm and we'll be stuck with Trump through 2020 at least.
Look right now what they are doing with this news conference from Camp David. Given all the crap that was revealed in this book the last few days - they just claim 'fake news'. The author is a fraud. He made things up and they'll weather this storm too.
I'm sitting here and listening to Trump babble on and am just getting more and more incensed and demoralized as he speaks.
Bill and Hillary will be put in jail before we see Trump and his administration gone. That's what it looks like we are facing.
Think about it - given all the crap that the Repugs have pulled and Trump has pulled and all the negative press that they are getting - they just forge on like nothing is wrong and they push this all back in our faces.
I'm going to stop now - because I'm babbling myself - but I just can't deal with this anymore.
Do you think the American People got the message that 'elections have consequences'? Will we see record voter turnout in Nov 2018?
The Dems should be out there right now with their own press conference - laying out their game plan and damning the Repugs and Trump. Their silence just baffles me.

By the time Mueller finishes his investigation and delivers his report - most everything in his report will have been discussed and discredited as 'fake news' - the American People will be desensitized and nothing will happen. We'll just become more demoralized and pushed further away from thinking that we can do anything to change things. The Repugs - with or without the help of Russia - will continue with voter suppression activities; stealing elections, gerrymandering - and they will retain their power. Sure - we'll pick up some seats - but we'll still be the minority party and we'll still remain impotent.

(25,241 posts)Look at all that they've weathered over the last year. Just the last week with this book and its revelations. Trump and the Repugs just stand up there and throw it back in our faces. They brazenly just stand up there and lie.
I believe that if Trump gets rid of Mueller - that we'll just see more and more of their brazen hypocritical remarks. They make it through a few news cycles - and we'll be back where we started.
I'd like to think you're right - but bottom line the American People are getting more and more demoralized by the day and they are realizing that all the resisting that they might be doing is not being supported by the Dems that we have in Congress right now. These Dems are silent. They don't counterpunch. They should have learned something from Trump - and that is - that they should be vocal and counterpunch. I'm really concerned about our Dem leadership. I really don't see any leadership. They are not even being reactive let alone proactive.

Trump will be with us at least until 2020 - and given all the damage he and the Repugs have done in the last year - I can't fathom what they'll do by 2020. Perhaps we'll even have to deal with Trump beyond 2020.
After witnessing what we've seen just this last week - with Trump's insane tweets; the threats to the FBI and Mueller and Steele. The Ryan/Rosenstein meeting? The revelations in this book by Wolff. The news conference from Camp David this morning.
And mostly - the silence from our leaders in the Dem Party - I don't hold out a lot of hope.
The Repugs and Trump just go on brazenly throwing up lies and talk of fake news in our faces and act like they are immune to all that is happening around them.
All this is demoralizing and they know it and they keep on doing it.
Unless our Dem leaders take the stage and become more vocal - we're just screwed.

(16,906 posts)I agree to a point with what your saying, but i gotta believe under laws of today there hands are pretty much tied. Now RIOTS in the streets are another thing, but this needs to be BY THE PEOPLE. Are we there yet? i have doubts.(i wish we were) See what happened to the protesters of the pipeline in ND? So until it actually affects the person involved they (citizens) won't do shit. I agree the Mueller thing won't get people to do much,and i DO NOT have an answer to that. BUT at some point PEOPLE gotta wake up, and election time (2018) might be too late.

(4,379 posts)If you are right, then the american people deserve to lose their democracy. I believe there is a breaking point and I believe there are still more patriots than assholes in America. If mueller gets fired I believe the American people will say enough is enough.
Remember Americas history. The people have gone stupid and crazy before. Things turn around.

The crazies are the Right Wingers. The crazies are the militia's holed up in the mountains. The crazies are the ones on the other side - on their side.
Those on our side - aren't crazy. We are non-violent. We believe in people's rights. We believe in what we learned that this country stands for and is about.
I'd like to think that we would really mobilize our people and use the power of the ballot box. But I ask you - given what we witnessed in the 2016 election. Given that we don't see the Party in power doing anything to prevent foreign influence in our elections. Given that the Party in power is still driven by voter suppression; gerrymandering; out and out stealing of elections. Given that the Dems in Congress are playing their impotent part and not really rallying the American People - I can only cross my fingers and hope that we'd come to our senses and we would see a overwhelming turnout at the ballot box.
But like I've said in some of my previous posts in this thread - on a day to day basis - I see more and more Dems becoming more demoralized - myself included. I know that I'll be making sure that my vote happens - but I can't be sure that others feel the same way.
