(1,896 posts)I think the lesson we learned buying all that stuff on multiple formats was that we weren't actually buying the content, just the physical container.
I'm not going to give you any crap about it, and I'll come out and confess that a big part of the reason I'm buying rather than listening is because I'm one of those people who reads better than I hear.

(15,696 posts)Copy the url of the video, paste it into the box at keepvid.com, and click the little arrow immediately to the right. I couldn't make it work on the ipad, but it worked on my hp laptop. I saved the file as 480p and moved it from downloads onto my desktop.
There are 2 parts to the audiobook on youtube.
As for legality issues, I bought the ibook yesterday and I have no intention of listening to the audio version. I just wanted to see if I could do it.

(16,894 posts)the you tube poster is NOT getting financial benefit tho

(11,175 posts)If you break into a house, steal someone's stuff, and then give away everything you stole, getting no financial benefit yourself -- it's still a crime.
people can justify stealing in many ways.

(16,894 posts)i don't think so
Jim Lane
(11,175 posts)Sorry, that doesn't follow.
What's actually going on is that technology has made it very difficult, as a practical matter, for copyright owners to obtain the protection they're entitled to. Under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, YouTube can't be held liable just because someone posted infringing material. Instead, the procedure is that the copyright holder sends YouTube a DMCA takedown notice. Only then does YouTube have an obligation to remove the video. (There are procedures for contesting the takedown, for example if there's an argument for a fair-use defense.)
The problem is that, while a music publisher is sending a takedown notice about a song, three other fans are posting the same song. The whack-a-mole process involves so much effort for so little result that a lot of copyright holders just don't bother.
It's still illegal, though. Occasionally, clicking on a YouTube link, you'll see a notice that the video is no longer available. This is often because, in that instance, the copyright holder has decided it's worthwhile to enforce its legal rights.
bluestarone
(16,894 posts)This is the times we live in, and that will be the only response (Video removed per copyright) If people disagree they DO NOT have to view or listen to what is there! A person has a right to post, it's between them and book author or video owner! So i'm sure NO ONE will get charged with anything OTHER than please remove it!
Jim Lane
(11,175 posts)Some people have already downloaded the infringing material. I think that, under the DMCA, YouTube is given two weeks to comply, so add in the time it takes for the takedown notice to be sent plus the time it takes YouTube to act and we can assume that plenty more people will download. All this hurts the copyright holder's legitimate rights.
If your house is burglarized, and the police eventually get back most of your stuff, that does not mean "problem solved."

(6,324 posts)Copyright laws and intellectual property laws dont care if the person had any personal or financial gain.
djg21
(1,803 posts)One who knowingly induces, causes or materially contributes to copyright infringement, by another but who has not committed or participated in the infringing acts him or herself, may be held liable as a contributory infringer if he or she had knowledge, or reason to know, of the infringement. See, e.g., Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. v. Grokster, Ltd., 545 U.S. 913 (2005); Sony Corp. v. Universal City Studios, Inc., 464 U.S. 417 (1984).
Financial benefit is not an element of infringement. And even where a copyright owner cannot prove damages, it can obtain statutory damages of $150,000 for willful infringement and attorneys fees.
You shouldnt post about things you know nothing about.
DU also should be on notice that it now faces exposure to liability thanks to Goonch, who posted this crap on multiple DU forums.

(108,973 posts)without permission is violating the law, whether they make money on it or not.

(6,137 posts)no copyright law is powerful enough. Wolff had unprecedented access to the white house that belongs to the people. The people should have access to the book. This isnt fiction.
djg21
(1,803 posts)Posting the audiobook to YouTube was an intentional infringement, and if you are downloading and listening to the audiobook without permission of the copyright holder you are infringing as well. There is no justification even if you bought the book. Mr. Wolff is entitled to make money from his efforts and artistic (writing) ability and there can be no justification for stealing from him.
