Maybe I'm not thinking this through.
They could use the wall he wants so much as a negotiating point to get more than Trump wants to concede. They could include his promise not to go after SS or medicare as well as DACA. He's desperate to build that wall. More desperate to do that than anything else he promised his base. Use his megalomania against him and the Republicans.
In the end the wall would be a financial disaster but it would start to show it's negative effects as soon as this Summer when undocumented Mexican labor is non existent to pick the crops. I'm pretty sure no one else will do that job, no matter how much they're hurting financially. And even if they would do the work would they take such low pay? Would there even be enough white Americans to do the job? I truly doubt it.
But the wall also would serve as a physical reminder that the people who proudly voted for him to stick it to those Messicans are paying for it themselves.
Plus I doubt that the wall would actually be built, no matter how much money is thrown at it. Who's going to build it? Illegals? White Flag wearing white people? Trump's base?
And if the wall becomes the huge failure it will be no one but Trump will be blamed. His name and the wall are forever linked. It will hurt the GOP too, for that very reason. Especially if Trump insists on putting his name on it just like a dog marking its territory
Democrats may be missing a real opportunity here if they don't take Trump up on his either/or threat.

(16,104 posts)If we can deliver DACA - and with the R's insistence on 'border security first' and THEN pathways to citizenship or at least legal status for everyone remaining, then let's break the cycle if it is possible.
A "10 year plan" to "the wall" 300 miles sounds like something we can reverse in 3 years.
We have a definite debt and obligation in most cases to those who are here, but we also owe it to the world to shut this idiot up if we get half a chance!

(53,410 posts)I don't care about his base. They will always be who they are. Period. We need to move on and leave them to their hatred. They need it just like they always have in order to function and survive. 20 or 30 percent of Americans are what they are. Low intelligence uber patriots who's main contribution to life is hate, resentment, and just plain meanness.
