Or a large segment of Americans lacking basic common sense, intelligence or a moral core.
People had pride in education, and being well informed.

(146,254 posts)released a document from a committee she served on. She's not really at risk of anything other than some frowns and blame from other committee members. The Pentagon Papers deal was very damaging to the person who released them. Daniel Ellsberg was charged with a very serious crime. The case was dismissed, but there was great danger to him.

(26,044 posts)They pretty much came out, attracted lots of discussion, and then dropped out of public consciousness, partly because they revealed as much about Democratic complicity under LBJ as about Nixon.
And the story would probably have ended there, except that Nixon got so paranoid about their release that he created the "Plumbers Group" that staged break-ins at various places that might contain dirt about Ellsburg, and wound up leading to the Watergate break-in itself.
