A new NASA study is one final nail in the coffin of the myth that natural gas is a climate solution, or a bridge from the dirtiest fossil fuels to low-carbon fuels like solar and wind.
NASA found that most of the huge rise in global methane emissions in the past decade is in fact from the fossil fuel industryand that this rise is substantially larger than previously thought. And that means natural gas is, as many earlier studies have found, not a climate solution.

(38,311 posts)Natural gas extraction and distribution schemes are among the largest industrial projects on earth today.
Gas is every bit as terrifying as coal, even with supplemental wind and solar projects.
A society powered entirely by wind and solar energy would look nothing like the consumer society many affluent humans now enjoy. In places without large hydroelectric reserves, and at any scale from off-the-grid households to blocs of nations, modern wind and solar systems use fossil fuels as "backup" whenever the sun is not shining and the wind is not blowing, which is generally more often than not.
Worldwide, the consumption of natural gas is increasing. Natural gas fueled power systems, even in combination with ambitious solar and wind schemes, won't save us. The only way to halt the increase of greenhouse gasses in earth's atmosphere is to quit fossil fuels. We won't do that. We are toast.
The problem is in how we think about things. This thing we now call economic "productivity" isn't really productivity at all, rather it is a direct measure of the damage we are doing to our earth's environment and our own human spirit.
