It is to laugh at white guys complaining about diversity.

https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/01/10/stem_reverse_discrimination_in_study/

This is according to a study by Pew Research, which said this week that an August survey of men in STEM careers showed that 19 per cent of fellas claim to have experienced gender discrimination and 7 per cent believe their gender makes it harder for them to succeed at work.

Nearly one fifth of the men surveyed – the type of guys who account for 80 per cent of the tech staff and 75 per cent of leadership at Google – said they simply can't get a fair break in the industry and have the deck stacked against them. Specifically, the broflakes said they had experienced gender discrimination against them at some point.

If the industry is overwhelmingly male and there is a drive to hire more female professionals then some men will be passed over in favor of a woman. While I don't believe all of these people are being honest about themselves , some qualified men seeking positions where their skills are equal to a woman's, may not receive a position due to their gender. Many men will accept this as necessary for equality in the workplace and move on to find another job. Some won't and state that they were discriminated against based upon gender. The fact is, both sides are not wrong.

10. They're not being passed over because of their gender. They just are no longer getting an advantage

because of it.

Having to compete with a larger group of qualified people does not mean someone's being discriminated against. It just means the competition has gotten tougher and they need to step up their game.

I'm rather fond of the writers over at The Reg. Always a high level of snark and intelligence.

7. I'm not sure laughing is the best approach

There is a fundamental shift going on in our economy and sure jobs are going away. It's now being felt higher up the ladder. But under economic stress, right wing parties (both nationalist and racist) gain power. That happens everywhere, including here. Donald Trump is a symptom of that.

I'm not saying we need to agree they are being discriminated against, but that we need to understand that some feel they are so we can account for it.

8. They need to laughed out of the room.

Laughter at authoritarians, fascists, misogynists, and bigots is the worst thing that you can do to them. Because they are 'serious cats' and laughing deflates them.

But laughing them out of the room and into the voting box is something that Trump took full advantage of.

11. In my experience, many white men (and white women to a lesser degree) are used to being passed over

for less qualified white people - they live with it and recognize that some people get breaks for various reasons. But the second they get passed over for a person of color - regardless how much more qualified that person is - they immediately assume that person is less qualified and got an unfair advantage - and they throw a complete fit.

In my view, the bottom line is that they recognize that life's not fair, but their white male privilege is supposed to guarantee that they will ALWAYS have an advantage over women and minorities. When that doesn't happen, they feel betrayed, angry and resentful.

Certainly, this doesn't apply to all white men, but it there is a critical mass of them that definitely view things that way.

Women have faced systemic discrimination in job opportunity and pay. Mediocre White men used to waltz into jobs because better candidates were denied a chance at those jobs. Some men hate diversity because diversity means that they will have to battle on level ground to get ahead, instead of having things tilted in their favor.
