When my grandparents came through Ellis..there

Was only one criteria...you had to spend a few minutes in front of the entry staff and not appear crazy. When we went on the tour they said if they deemed you were crazy they would mark an X on your coat and your whole family had to get back on ship and return home.

They were also looking for some sort of eye disease, probably some other diseases that would bar them from entry.

And it's possible that you needed to either have some small sum of money, and/or a place to stay.

whatever the contagious ailment at any particular time...

We joked about how horrible the trip was and how mad your family would be with you if you all had to turn around

because we weren't US citizens, if a war broke out we could be subjected to deportation until obtaining citizenship
