Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsTrump is killing the very idea and ideal of the American presidency. I for one am at a loss for
words at trumps latest utterance in reference to Africa and Haiti. But my emotional response to this is getting rawer and more elemental as time moves. Usually I get past this stuff in short order. Not this time, my sense of disgust and outrage is for once overshadowed by a sense of humiliation for my nation.
Is this person really the president? Its not what I recognize as the institution that has been the guiding light for Americans and often others around the world. He is dismantling the earned honor, regard and respect acquired over decades and centuries of the the office that was handed to him as a temporary caretaker.
It may be that he has committed an unrecoverable offense that will damage this nation for generations. He will be long gone while the consequences of his heinous acts will be visited on the populace he has so shamefully betrayed.

Sorry for the disgusting imagery, but I've had it with #45 and Republicans.

today, in a perhaps inevitable course of events stemming from That Day In November, our nation displayed its figurative asshole to the entire world. there will be consequences.

(16 posts)What model or system do you suggest we replace it with?
Glorfindel
(9,706 posts)A sovereign who is above politics and a prime minister who gets down and dirty and takes his or her chances. The monarch performs all the "high and mighty" executive actions (launching ships, opening bridges, comforting and inspiring the nation) and the prime minister does everything possible to get the party's agenda enacted into law. If there's a vote of no confidence, the prime minister gets replaced, but the honor and dignity of the nation, as embodied in the sovereign, is unimpaired. It doesn't have to be a monarchy; most countries have a presidency that is beyond politics and a prime minister to do the day-to-day running of the country. Our situation of having the chief of state and the head of government embodied in one person has served us well (mostly), but its flaws are being exposed for all to see.

It's impssible to work within a two-party system when one party holds all the marbles and refuses to play.
