I just found out my cousin is one of the most famous and beloved men in the world (really)

I recently found President Obama is my cousin! I could not be happier! An uncle of mine who is into genealogy gave me a printout showing that the President and I share the same great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great grandfather from my mother’s and his mother’s side. His name was Thomas Bloomfield (1617 - 1684). I have a printout of the family tree, but couldn’t manage to post it.

Now I just need to figure out how to get on the invite list of President Obama’s next family reunion.

Later, I’ll see if I can get anywhere with it. I know very little about my family. Folks never talked about anyone farther back than their own parents and siblings, and even that, over their entire lives, totaled not more than a sentence.

My spouse is a 7th cousin of Barack Obama through Moses Teague, born in 1718 in Maryland and a slaveholder.. The website lists Moses Teague as ancestor of Obama and my own research elsewhere shows the same Moses Teague as an ancestor of Jimmy Carter too, so my spouse is 6th cousins to Jimmy. Spouse is also cousin of FDR and John Adams and U.S. Grant but we try not to think about the other less than stellar cousins who have popped up in my research!

and it turns out they came over on the Mayflower. I thought that was really cool until I found out something like 20% of the people in the US can trace their ancestry back to the Mayflower. I'm not so special after all. My father's side came over as an indentured servant (he had stolen some pies and got caught) and was bailed out of prison, taken to America (Maryland, Prince Georges County, 1670), and worked for 9 years as a servant. Afterwards he worked enough to buy a farm and become fairly prosperous. I have copies of his will even.
