Trumpy is stating clearly that he's manipulating his base.

But you know what? His base doesn't care whether they're being manipulated. Remember just after the election, Trumpy attended a rally in which he told his "base","I don't need you right now. I need you at election time." And his base didn't flinch. They still loved him. And here it is, nearly a year later, and Trumpy's denigrations of his base are leaked to the public. Well, what's his cowardly base going to do? Cover their ears and eyes. It's too much mental work for them to use their critical thinking skills and conclude that they've been conned into subjugation. They'd rather fantasize that Trumpy is one of them. Trumpy was never one of them and will never be one of them. But sometimes fantasy is much more attractive than reality. And his base loves to fantasize.
