Tennessee pastor apologizes for asking teen to engage in sexual contact

One of a churchs pastors apologized for his actions after a woman called him out for asking her to engage in sexual contact when she was 17.
Jules Woodson recently raised the issue, saying that Andy Savage asked her for oral sex when he was a youth pastor in Texas around 20 years ago, The New York Times reported. Savage is now a pastor with Highpoint Church in Memphis, Tennessee, and talked about the incident during a service this last Sunday.
Woodson said in a letter posted on a blog that Savage continued to take a leadership role in the church, including leading a two-day event at the church called True Love Waits that promoted abstinence from intercourse before marriage and abstinence in any physical contact that might lead to sexual arousal.
Savage said Sunday that he apologized at the time of the incident before resigning from that previous position. He apologized again and said he never wanted to minimize what happened. Church members pictured in a video stood while giving applause to show their support. (My comment: What a pack of fools.)

(35,300 posts)We know him mostly these days for the Byrd Rule, which was invoked during drafting of the tax 'reform' bill.
He was a senator (brief stint as a representative) from WVa, in case there's a plethora of other Robert Byrds. Not the most liberal (D), by any stretch of the imagination, but where he spent most of his life politically is certainly not where he started.

bullet points of his life.
As a youth pastor, he drove a 17 year old into the woods and coerced her into giving him a BJ. He then apologized to her and made her promise not to ever tell anyone. She told the church leaders and they did nothing. She broke down in a woman's fellowship meeting and again said what happened. The leaders were then forced to fire him, but they refused to say why and held him a going away party.
(he now claims he quit and went home to TN.)
He then tweeted about Lauer, how he was "saddened to hear of another high profile person in the midst of a sexual misconduct allegations. It's beginning to seem sex on our own terms isn't working. go figure"
His victim then emailed him about what he did to her. He ignored her and she went public.
In 2016 Highpoint was in a merger with another church: The Church at Shillings Farm. it was previously known as Immanuel Baptist. before the name change a youth pastor had been accused of molesting at least 4 boys. They came forward at the time. When they became men they came forward again accusing the leadership of covering up their abuse. But now Immanuel/Shilling was merging with Highpoint. As a pastor at Highpoint Savage assured parishoners that nothing was going on at Shilling and endorsed buying their church instead of merging. This action made sure that the victims could not sue and had no where to go to get answers as to why their abuse was covered up and the youth pastor not punished. IOW how many more victims are there?
So now we have a man who sexually assaulted a young female and had the church leaders cover it up so he would not lose his career. He in turn helped cover up the rape of 4 boys, saddened to hear of the sexual abuse by Lauer, is now raising 5 sons. Let that sink in for a minute.
