Not sure about the rest of you.

I live in East TN, less than 50 miles from Oak Ridge (surely you know it's history). I grew up in suburban Atlanta in the 50s and 60s. I learned to hide under my desk in school in case there was an attack. I believed then that the behavior would help. I, of course, no longer believe that would be safe. In the early 70s I worked at an environmental center in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP). In a very popular area of the park there is a cave that you can walk into upright. At some point it was stocked as a fallout shelter. By the time we were taking school kids in there, it was pretty rank and was cleaned out. There was a gate at the entrance to the cave, not a real barrier.

All this to say, if there is a nuclear attack, my husband and I will not react. We do not want to survive the aftermath of an actual attack. We are 68, we are retired nurses and have cared for people who were chronically ill from environmental factors. We hope the best for those who try to survive, but do not wish to join them.

No reaction other than to try to stay calm.

Back during the Y2K thing my sister and her significant other stockpiled supplies and weapons. She tried to get me to panic along with her. I told her that if anything really did happen, I won't be lashing out against my neighbors so I could survive. I would never want to survive at the expense of others.

I'm not someone who likes guns. In fact, quite the opposite. BUT, having lived a decade in rural GA, I came to realize very quickly that there's only so much gun control that will work.

But when I thought about what went on in Hawaii and how I'd like to be able to respond to such an emergency, my preferences definitely included some way to make a very quick very certain, mostly painless exit.

I'm more of a quality than quantity of life person, anyway. By their very nature, nuclear attacks pretty much erase that whole quality aspect. I'd rather go fast, and in one piece, than slowly, painfully rotting away, bit by bit.

I have to agree...if there was a full on nuclear assault, I’d be rushing to my family’s side...with no consideration of whether I’d survive or not. Guess that’s not just an East TN thang....it applies here in Nashvegas too!

Many years ago I built a house for a guy who lived down the road a ways.
He revealed that he had an extensive underground shelter--it was stocked with
supplies. I asked him who would give him the warning in time to get down
there. Most likely, there would a flash, and that's it.
A post nuclear war world would be a nightmare. In spite of the worst natures
of man, I don't think it will happen.

In East Tn where I live, we have within 35 miles:

BAE Systems (makes explosives for Military)
Phipps Bend Nuclear Power plant
Eastman Chemical (huge plant)
Nuclear Fuel Services
Holston Defense

The military does flyovers regularly over this area (nearest base is in Georgia 5 hours away)

I live 5 minutes from BAE and their are missiles buried in the mountain on their property.

Oak Ridge is 2 hours away.

I refuse to live in fear. So many others live in constant danger daily.

In a place that would be considered a prime target.

I think that the school and CD officials figured that it was a waste of time and if they did get an alert it would be better just to send us out to play.

(Which in itself was odd - we were both JAGs.) One day, he walked into my office and asked what I would do if I knew that there were incoming ICBMs.

I allowed that I would call my wife and tell her I loved her and then walk across the parade ground to the officer's club and get a shot of scotch - take it outside and toast the incoming. He was not amused.

I don't remember his plans but I remember they weren't terribly clever.

With limited nukes available and questionable targeting and detonation software, the real possibility exists of an air burst, likely over the West Coast. Of course another missile could target the East Coast pop centers. Such a(n) air burst(s) would have little effect regarding physical damage but would almost certainly have a different devastating impact. EMP.

So are you still prepared to die if only your electronics are fried? Suddenly it's the 19th century .... only some very old cars and trucks would work ... communications are cut for a while ... how do you live? Or, do you live, but then it will not be a blast or radiation killing you unless you are rather close to the detonation. Is suicide an option? You see, preppers take this possibility into account. Could you live until martial law settles things down?

Like I said ... middle option ... lots of gray ... what do you do?

and accept what happens. Where do you run to? Back in the 60s there were designated shelters that you could try to get to, but doubtful.
