The funny thing is, this country could not be what it is without people from shithole countries. The Native Americans who welcomed us, only to be driven into the sea before being ghettoized into reservations. The black people who came over by force and in chains to work the land and build many a structure, including the very house on Pennsylvania Avenue that trump resides in when not golfing in Florida. The Chinese that laid track, the Irish who laid brick, the Mexicans who pick our food, landscape our yards, tile our roofs, and care for our children.

All of these people are woven into the fabric of the crazy quilt that makes up this deeply flawed country still striving to live up the potential written into the documents of our founding fathers, – many of whom themselves owned slaves, and butchered Indians. The trump slogan “Make America Great Again” is a misnomer. A red herring.

The truth is this country has never been great. Yes, we’ve had extraordinary moments and done great things. We saved the world from the Nazis. We sent a man to the moon. Just under a decade ago, we set aside for just a moment, the latent racism that has held this country back more than other social ill we suffer from, and elected an elegant black man who shepherded us through war and recession.

We have now course incorrected to a small, venal, sexist, racist (and god knows how many other “ists”) man who thinks people from countries like Haiti, Africa (which is a continent, but I don’t think he’s aware of that geographical fact), are “shitholes”. While people who look like they could start a new Aryan race are the desirables.

It’s really that simple. He prefers white people over people of color. As if he and his progeny are the only kind of people who should be furthermore allowed into this country. Never mind the fact that his ancestors, once known as “Drumpf”, came from Germany and Scotland. Countries that have at one time or another fallen into the shithole category. In his mind, the only shitholes are the countries with black and brown majorities.

There’s really only one answer to meet this moment in our history. There is an election in 2018. Then another in 2020. All the shitholers should unite. We should unite and hold him and his enablers accountable.

There are more of us than there are of them.
