Former Vice President Joe Biden said Americans are "living through a battle for the soul of this nation" in a tweet marking Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

"Dr. King said that change 'comes through continuous struggle.' As we celebrate his legacy today, we're once again living through a battle for the soul of this nation," Biden tweeted.

Biden's message come as President Trump faces intense backlash for his alleged comments calling Haiti, El Salvador and African nations "shithole countries" during a meeting with lawmakers on immigration reform.

Biden criticized Trump over the comments last week, saying "it's not what a president should believe."
